Feuerland / Parage

Justus Kohncke [Kompakt]

‘Feuerland’ will make anyone who had Cologne producer and Kompakt [l] stalwart Justus Kohncke [a] down as a fey techno type think again.

The B-side, ‘Parage’, sees Kohncke go back in time to the days when disco music was made by men in huge studios accompanied by real orchestras playing the string sections.

Its homage to the strings used on Chic’s ‘Good Times’ sits well with the liquid funk bassline and makes for an infectious dance floor affair.

Who knows, it may even pique the curiosity of your groovy old uncle.

However, Kohncke really goes out on a limb on the title track penned by Michael Rother, one of the founders of Kraftwerk, when he was working in his follow-up band, Neu (a Krautrock act that didn’t get the same props as Can but were equally deserving of praise).

‘Feuerland’ sees Kohncke uphold a long and proud musical tradition of experimentation; one that has been inextricably linked to society in Germany since the start of the post-war period.

Understated drums shuffle away in the background, while gradually building bursts of fuzzy guitar oozes an irresistible, existential warmth.

It won’t set the dance floor on fire, but it will provide solace for lonely souls — no matter where they are.
