Festival Tips: Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Luciano, Popof

It’s hard to imagine the Monegros festival until you’ve actually lived it. Set in a desolate Spanish desert landscape, the event sees 40,000 people raving from sundown until well into the next day; the festival’s five stages host a potent mixture of the world’s best DJs and live acts, from techno to electro, drum & bass to hip-hop. It might be an endurance test, but as any Monegros veteran can tell you, the Spaniards know how to party, and the invited acts invariably pull out all the stops for the frenzied crowd.

We asked Richie Hawtin [a], Loco Dice [a], Luciano [a] and Popof [a] what to expect.

Richie Hawtin

Have you played Monegros Festival before?

Yes, I’ve played Monegros every year since 2004 and it’s been an amazing event each time. The setting is really special, and the desert wind can turn it into a crazy environment, but that doesn’t stop the crowd from enjoying it, which is really cool.

How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?

I’m playing the Superbock festival in Portugal the night before, and the Pollerwiesen Festival in Germany the night after, so I’m afraid it’s just a quick trip, but hopefully I’ll be able to hear some of Marco and Dice playing back to back—they’ve been doing some really amazing sets together lately.  And of course it would be great to hear some of Jeff Mills [a] and Laurent Garnier [a]—true legends.

What have you planned for your set?

You can’t really plan ahead too much. It’s important to see how the crowd is feeling when it’s time for me to go on.

What festival survival tips do you have?

Don’t try to do it all.  When you run around trying to see everything you miss enjoying the full experience for any one thing.

Loco Dice

Have you played Monegros Festival before?

Sure! Last year with Marco Carola [a] (no b2b) and it was amazing.

How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?

I will enyoy the night and hang with old friends and I will try to catch Busta Rhymes

What have you planned for your set?

What festival survival tips do you have?

Luciano

Have you played Monegros Festival before?

Yes I’ve been at Monegros twice, I think specially last year with Aether live wich was one off the greatest performance we had ... Was magic and wide!

How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?

I plan, as always, to spend as much time as I can there, but my rhythm is pretty fast as I’m running around the world and always getting down every Sunday at our party Vagabundos in Ibiza.

What have you planned for your set?

The idea is to always do something new, and that’s something you can’t really plan before! So, big surprise, and you will see if you come!

What festival survival tips do you have?

Don’t dress too fancy and feel good in what you wear! Especially for long festivals like Monegros. And bring a cap and sunglasses!

Popof

Have you played Monegros Festival before?

No, it’s my first time at Monegros and i’m so excited to play there!

How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?

I’ll stay there as long as I can to enjoy partying at Monegros and I wish to see so many artists, such as Marco Carola vs Loco Dice, Busta Rhymes, Drumcorps Aka Aaron Spectre or Matthew Jonson.

What have you planned for your set?

A live act from tekhouse to dancefloor tekno with hypnotic and funny sounds.

What festival survival tips do you have?

My tracks!!!
