Festival Tips: Fedde Le Grand, Mark Knight, Kim Fai, Pan-Pot
20 July, 2010 | 10.43AMOf all the electronic-music festivals in the world, perhaps none is more iconic than Loveparade. From its origins as a counter-culture street parade to its present-day status as an annual attraction for music lovers from around the globe, it’s given proof that music and dancing can change the world. This year’s festival is held in Duisburg, Germany, and Beatport will be right in the thick of things: we’ve teamed up with Fedde Le Grand, Mark Knight and VirtualNights to present a float.
We asked Fedde, Mark, Kim Fai, and Pan-Pot what to expect.
Fedde Le Grand

Have you played Loveparade before?
Yes, several times, and I have to say it’s always been one of the most amazing experiences for me as a DJ. It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t been before, but just the amount of people there makes it different to almost anywhere else you could play. I remember the last time I was there, there must have been about 500,000 people right in front of me at one point, it was at the beginning of my set, and when I dropped the first beat the whole crowd went nuts. That still gives me a rush thinking of it today!
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
There are a lot of artists that I’d like to see but I’m so busy playing that I don’t think I’ll get to catch up with too many people. I’m playing on my own Takeover float in the daytime, which I’m doing with Mark Knight and the guys from Beatport, then at the end of the Parade I’m headlining on the main stage with guys like Guetta and Tiesto. Then after the Parade is done, that night I’m also headlining the 1Live official afterparty. Then I think I’ll collapse! If the weather’s great then it’ll be one of the most amazing days of this year, I think.
What have you planned for your set?
I’ve got a lot of cool re-edits of tracks to play out and of course some new mixes of my own. I usually take a lot of music with me and then I’ll check how the vibe is and the crowd and then take it from there.
What festival survival tips do you have?
For something like Love Parade – take a lot of water!! If the weather keeps on being as hot as it has been then you’re going to heat up quickly and you’ll be out there for hours, so make sure you have plenty of water, a hat and some sunscreen. Oh, and try and stay close to the toilets as well! Other than that, just let rip for what will be one of the best days of your life…

Have you played Loveparade before?
I played Loveparade a couple of years ago. It was a totally unique experience. I’ve never witnessed that many people going crazy and partying in the street. The atmosphere was amazing!
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
It will be an all-day/all-night affair. I start the day playing the Beatport float with Fedde le Grand, then around 5pm I will (somehow!) make my way over to the main stage to play. Then off to play the afterparty with Fedde and Guetta amongst others.
As most of my time is going to be spent running from place to place playing, I’m not going to have much time to check out the rest. However, I’m looking forward to playing with Fedde le Grand (maybe some back to back action). If I did have the time, I would like to check out Guido Schneider
and the Berlin revue orchestra.
What have you planned for your set or performance?
Don’t really want to give away too much… People can definitely expect to hear me drop the new track I’ve been working on with Tiesto and of course ‘Conscindo’ by myself and Wolfgang Gartner. There will be lots of special re-edits on the day too.
What festival survival tips do you have?
Pace yourself and never wear socks with sandals. [Wise words! -Ed.]
Kim Fai

Have you played Loveparade before?
No this will be my first year. I’ve heard about it for many years so i can’t wait to get over to see what all the fuss is about!
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
Unfortunately I’m only there for one day, so I plan to cram in as much as I can in those 24 hours. There are so many great DJs there I don’t know where to start. I really want to see Fedde again. Caught him at Space Miami at the 2009 WMC and he was awesome. Hopefully I can catch M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade too.
What have you planned for your set?
Well, I have a bunch of new stuff done that I’ve been testing and tweaking at my shows recently, so I’m eager to see how those go down. I’ve also been working on a few summer bootlegs which I’m also excited about, though I won’t say which. So all in all, it’s going to be rammed with exclusive stuff!
What festival survival tips do you have?
Be prepared! One minute the sun is burning down on you, and the next—especially in the U.K.—it starts pouring with rain. So make sure you take shorts and a rain coat. Also drink plenty of water along with those alcoholic beverages!
Pan-Pot

Have you played Loveparade before?
We have never played at Loveparade itself, but in 2006, when Loveparade happened in Berlin for the last time, we played at the Mobilee showcase on one of the underground stages next to Loveparade. So people who went to the actual parade had to pass the underground stages and we were lucky, some stayed! It was pretty funny, as some of them looked like they had just broken out of a pet zoo…
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
We’ll play one of the last sets, but we’ll definitely be there some time before. We’re looking forward to seeing Guido Schneider and his orchestra. Besides that there will be a lot of people we know anyway, so it’s a good time to hang out with them.
What have you planned for your set?
It’s probably one of the biggest gigs you can play and the crowd is pretty mixed up. We’ll just try to make as many people dance as possible.
What festival survival tips do you have?
Laser swords, neon lights, and pink tank tops. Just try to not get lost!
