Festival Tips: A-Trak, Sascha Funke, dOP, Roman Fluegel
15 July, 2010 | 2.14AMFor anyone in Germany right now, the Melt! Festival—in name, anyway—might seem slightly redundant; we’ve been melting in the summer heat for weeks now. Perhaps they could re-christen it the Freeze! Festival, just for this year?
All kidding aside, Melt! is one of Germany’s biggest events, held in the surreal, post-apocalyptic setting of Ferropolis—a kind of Jurassic Park of industrial technologies—and pulling together the A-list of the A-list of underground electronic dance music and indie rock.
We asked A-Trak
, Sascha Funke
, dOP, and Roman Fluegel
what to expect.
A-Trak

Have you played Melt! Festival before?
No, this is my first time. Do they have tuna melt sandwiches?
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
I’ll only be there for a few hours… I’m playing Extrema festival in Austria earlier that day so I’ll be coming in pretty late. I’m excited to see Chromeo! They’re playing right before me. I might try and steal a tambourine from them.
What have you planned for your set?
I just started doing a new set with visuals that I control from Serato. It’s pretty cool: when you start scratching them, the image moves… You’ll see! Literally.
What festival survival tips do you have?
For DJs or for the crowd? For DJs I’d say go to catering as often as they allow you, and make sure you don’t play the same tracks that everyone else is playing. For the crowd… don’t lose your phone!

Have you played Melt! Festival before?
Yes, around six or seven times. Melt! is my favourite festival in Germany. I was there the first time in 1997 when it started. As far as I remember I only missed it twice. I am a Melt! maniac.
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
From Friday till the very end. My girlfriend and I, it is her first Melt!, so we wanna spend the whole time there. Fingers crossed for the weather.
What have you planned for your set?
I play the last set of the festival, so it’s gonna be special for sure. I hope I save enough energy.
What festival survival tips do you have?
Well.... water, sun cream, and kisses.

Have you played Melt! Festival before?
No, it will be the first time for us to play this festival. We heard a lot about it, and we can see it’s a huge event considering the amount of people asking us for gueslist.
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
Due to our crazy summer shedule, we will arrive on Saturday and we will have to go play on Sunday as well, not really far. So we can’t stay very long. But we will be with a lot of friends for a crazy 24-hour run.
What have you planned for your set?
As usual, a lot of energy, a lot of showtime, some fresh tracks, and a lot of fun.
What festival survival tips do you have?
Bring earplugs, drink a lot of water, don’t plan any meetings, and don’t try to sleep, as there’s music non stop.
See you there!
Roman Fluegel

Have you played Melt! Festival before?
Oh yes, I’ve been there with Alter Ego performing live already a couple of times. I had some good and bad weather experiences at Melt! Festival but what makes this gathering so special is the unique festival ground combined with a wonderful crowd that does not care too much about the rain or the sun. It seems they just want to have a good time, and I like that!
How long do you plan to spend there, and which other artists are you excited to see?
I will be there the whole Friday. I’m very much looking forward to see my favourite German band, Tocotronic, live on stage again and will check out the XX before I end up listening to Ricardo’s set during sunrise.
What have you planned for your set?
It’ll be my first DJ set at Melt! and I’m totally excited! I will definitely try some new stuff by myself that’s not released yet. It’s always a bit of a challenge to play on a festival stage but the main thing is to take some good records with you, and I’m pretty sure I’ll find some in my box…
What festival survival tips do you have?
Don’t forget about your friends, especially if their heads are temporarily irritated, go with the flow, relax, have a good time, eat, drink, make it a very special day, blablabla...ENJOY!
