Felix Da Housecat gets anthemic

The summer of 2010 is clearly all about the anthems. Now Felix Da Housecat [a] aims to up the ante with ‘Thee Anthem’, a synth-led epic featuring lighters-in-the-air melodies and heavier compression than the Death Star’s trash compactor. Given a vibe like that, who else but Eric Prydz [a] to remix it? (Of course, that was easy for Prydz to arrange, since the record appears on his own label, Pryda Friends [l].)

The tune’s new-wave-disco-meets-progressive-house style isn’t so far from what Sander Kleinenberg does on his new single ‘M.A.N.I.A.C.’, which raises the interesting question: are we about to see an ‘80s revival in commercial house?

Felix, no stranger to retro fetishes, released another track this week, but ‘Ooops!’ (out on Boston’s Dazed Recordings) is a very different beast, incorporating electro house leads, UK funky’s syncopated snares, and an extended passage of Nina Simone’s ‘Sinnerman’.

Simone, of course, never goes out of style. In fact, she’s in the Beatport Top 10 right now, via Thyladomid’s runaway success ‘The Voice’, which incorporates the singer’s ‘Feeling Good’. (They’re just the latest to sample the High Priestess of Soul; in recent years, Luciano [a], Ricardo Villalobos [a], and Miss Fitz [a] have all made house anthems using those same tracks.)

Clearly, whoever wants to rule the charts this summer need only do one thing: turn out an Italo-progressive-soca banger with vintage soul vocals. Who’s stepping up?
