Featured Chart: Sebastien Leger
7 July, 2010 | 2.56AMOne of the French DJ and producer Sebastien Leger‘s very first EPs was called ‘There Is Life After Us’. The first of many Leger records for the Black Jack label, its title may have been misleadingly humble: over a decade later, Leger shows no signs of ceding his position in the upper ranks of the global DJ elite.
Part of Leger’s staying power has been his versatility. He’s gone from origins in disco-inflected tech house—très français—to a punchy progressive/electro fusion. In recent years, he’s been stripping back again, emphasizing the “tech” in tech house as he gives way to his most mischievous percussive urges.
For proof, just see his latest Beatport chart. He leads the top 10 off with his brand new big-tent anthem ‘Silicone Carne’, a sax-led stomper that’s not afraid to let its freak flag fly, before diving into his own drum-battered remix of Umek’s ‘Circles of Hell’. Leger’s ‘Indian Shot’ is an even deeper slice of shuffling, percussive funk, blippy and beefy in just the right proportions. And ‘Superdrums’, also from the ‘Silicone Carne’ EP, is a spirited blast of jazz drums and percolating bleeps that’s got summertime written all over it.
Reset Robot, Channel X
, Mladen Tomic
, and Pascal Dior
and Drumcomplex
earn prominent places in Leger’s box by virtue of driving vocal chops, nervous melodies, and slinky, jacking grooves.
Peter Horrevorts’ remix of JML’s ‘Into the Wild’ is the closest thing to deep house here, thanks to those deep chords and floating vocals, but it’s got the muscle required for tougher, more tech-influenced sets.
