Featured Chart: Luke Slater

Did someone say techno?

That’s the order of the day on Luke Slater‘s new top 10 (and his first Beatport chart since April, in fact). Read on for a track-by-track analysis, with audio.

Kicking off with his new single for Ostgut Ton [l], ‘Take It Down (In Dub)’—released under his L.B. Dub Corp moniker—Slater drags us deep into the chaos of a crumbling world. His Planetary Assault Systems [a] remix of Terence Fixmer’s ‘Drastik’ is tougher and clearer.

Another new cut, Marcel Dettman’s Traversible Wormhole remix on CLR [l], is a pummeling face-melter with high end to spare, and Go Hiyama’s ‘Survival’ (on Token) could prove just as fatal to the faint of heart. Reeko’s new ‘6 Sievert’ is blistering, but also weirdly beautiful. (The other tracks on the same EP, a comp released by the new POLE label, are well worth checking out as well, particularly Oscar Mulero’s laser-strafed ‘Simulated Visibility’.)

It’s not all so punishing, though: DVS1 and Zak Khutoretsky’s ‘Pressure’ is a beautiful, almost peaceful study for quickstep drums and church organs. (Now signed to Transmat, it was the second tune in Ben Klock’s recent ‘Berghain 04’ mix.) Jeff Mills’ ‘Drew’, taken from his ‘Drummer 26’ DJ tools, is a clean, lean transition track. And Arnold Jarvis‘ ‘Take Some Time Out’ is a mid-tempo house classic—originally released in 1987, and reissued last year by Creme Organization [l]—better suited to Sunday mornings in Panorama Bar than Saturday nights downstairs at Berghain.

Finally, Slater brings a little historical context with ‘Surface Noise’, released back in 1997 under his Planetary Assault Systems [a] guise. (For more like that, don’t miss Peacefrog’s ‘Aptitude for Experimentation Vol. 1 - 1991 - 1993’ and ‘Vol. 2 - 1994’, two retrospective compilations released last month.)
