Featured Chart: Kate Simko

Not only is Kate Simko [a] a crack producer, continually evolving her unique style of pulsating, nuanced, and sensual house music. She’s also a killer DJ, the type often called a “DJs’ DJ,” with a wide range and an unfailing knack for finding the hidden thread between disparate tunes.

Befitting her hometown, Simko’s new Beatport Top 10 has a definite Chicago feel, showcasing tight, jacking tech-house grooves from the likes of Mr. G, Iz and Diz, and DJ Bone. Highlights? John Roberts’ “Ever or Not,” from his new album on Dial Records [l], is an essential pick for DJs of a moodier stripe. DJ Bone’s “Struggle 2,” from 2006, is a gorgeous slab of emotive Detroit techno. Deetron’s 2008 remix of Joris Voorn’s “Blank” is a tribal-tinged classic that’s ripe for reappraisal. And both of Simko’s tracks here—a remix of Dilo’s “Waheira” and her remix of Alexis Cabrera’s “Sin Ton Ni Son"—show off her versatility, alternating between gentle melodies and lithe, muscular percussive workouts.

Read on for the full chart and a sampler of Simko’s own productions.
