Fabric to push Angolan music on Friday

Cutting-edge London club Fabric has dedicated one of its upcoming Friday nights to a type of Angolan dance music known as kuduru.

The uptempo, energetic kuduru music, which sounds like a mixture of ragga, baile funk and Miami bass, is particularly popular in the former Portuguese colonies in Africa, as well as in the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal.

On Friday 4th May, Fabric’s Room One will feature Lisbon-based kuduru live act Buraka Som Sistema, as well as dancehall/reggae DJ Diplo [a] who reportedly is a big fan of the genre.

They will play alongside Baltimore fidget house masters Sinden and Switch in what will be a soundclash of global urban beats.

“Kuduru music is phenomenal,” said Shaun Roberts, Fabric’s promotions manager.

“Diplo is really pushing the sound and wanted Buraka to play live at Fabric.

“The group are absolutely massive in Lisbon, and play a mixture of breakbeat and ragga with really cool MCs.”

“I don’t have a clue what they’re rapping about as it’s all in Portuguese, but it sounds mental.”

Fabric is one of the most respected clubs in the world, and their latest venture into kuduru is typical of the club’s commitment to new dance music.

Since it opened almost eight years ago, the club has pretty much sold out every weekend, and this is mainly due to the fact its line-ups are always fresh.

How do they do it?

“The success of Fabric is down to the people who run it, our DJs, and the management staff,” Shaun told Beatportal.

“We work with artists and promoters who really know their music, and we let them get involved with the line-ups and suggest guests.

“We’re also very lucky that myself and Judy Griffith, who programs Saturday nights at the club, are given carte blanche when it comes to booking artists.

“The owner lets us book who we want. And that freedom means the club can be totally fresh every week.”
