Brookes Brothers [Breakbeat Kaos]
8 May, 2008 | 9.53AM- Section: Music Reviews Topics: Beatport Blog
The new darlings of the drum & bass scene – Brookes Brothers – bolster their nostalgically-named release schedule this month with ‘F-Zero’.
This is a typically floaty and drifting affair, made accessible by the Brooke’s Bros’ tough beats. These producers were allegedly schooled by none other than Sub Focus himself in the beat-making department, which is probably one of the reasons why this production sounds so gnarly.
The samples inside ‘F Zero’ really do take you back the days of classic SNES game it’s named after.
Whilst there is a lot of musicality and melody exploration in ‘F Zero’, its mix never gets crowded with more than a few ideas, which supports the mantra, “less is more”.
‘Dawn Treader’, featuring Liverpool’s very own ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ Futurebound, is an epic production leaning towards the nostalgic vibes in ‘F Zero’.
These producers really know how to make dance music, because when the record gets going, all the stereo effects get killed, leaving you face-to-face with delicious filtered bass.
Whilst the melodies here won’t make Beethoven jealous, this is a top track that will help get DJs from A to B.
