Expanding Contracting
Expanding Contracting
Quince [Delsin]
8 May, 2008 | 11.34PMFor the past decade, Dutch label Delsin has been quietly putting out some of the world’s best techno.
Inspired by the deep, melancholic sounds of Detroit, the label’s strength lies in the fact that it doesn’t merely replicate its influences but gives a fresh interpretation on the source material, pushing it forward.
Delsin is in particularly good form at the moment, with Steve Rachmad and Chymera putting out some of their best work on the label.
However, Quince aka Dutch producer Bram Sluiter’s latest EP goes even further.
Both ‘Expanding’ and ‘Contracting’ have a housey swing and gradually unfolding arrangements that make them irresistible.
‘Expanding’ starts with a niggling, squelchy acid line, augmented by crisp snares and brought to an unknown location by detuned, mysterious chords - a bit like Drexciya doing house music.
‘Contracting’ also has a groovy rhythm, but its more insistent and pulsing, yet the layered chords build and build – and eventually, they lead the listener to the same eerie place reached on ‘Expanding’.
An amalgamation of Detroit techno, electro otherworldliness and acid crackle, Quince’s part of Planet Delsin sounds like a wonderful place.
