Exclusive interview with The Body Snatchers
3 July, 2008 | 9.55AM- Section: Music News
We chat with The Body Snatchers about the release of their “Acid Crunk” debut album,’Feeling Good, Looking Nice, Smelling Right’ which is out now.
Scene players 30Hz (Ginz) and Baobinga join forces to bring you their new alter ego project The Body Snatchers, and after the success of their club smashes ‘Big Ass, Miniskirt’, ‘Freaky Ho’ and ‘Call Me’ they have just released their debut album ‘Feeling Good, Looking Nice, Smelling Right’ which is out now on Passenger Records.
The album showcases a host of UK and US MC talent including the likes of Sporty-O (signed to Lil Jon’s label) Goldmouf and Mr Smith from the US to UK-based MCs like Frilla, Surplus, Kamikaze and Yolanda (Bugz In the Attic + Massive Attack).
After remixes for the likes of Noisia and Kraft Kuts, The Body Snatchers are bringing you a new urban / dance cross over sound they like to call “Acid Crunk”.
We caught up with guys to talk money, music, ladies and their love for Lionel Ritchie.
Check it!
Can you please introduce each other? Be as nice or nasty as you like!
Binga: Ginz came from DC with a load of high-falutin’ ideas.
But we done beat that out of him and now he’s tolerable. Homie brings some silky-fingered production skills and a fine appreciation of bizarre noises.
Plus, he’s smaller than me.
Ginz: Binga is a coal eatin’, pudding-brained ape-man from a small town in Yorkshire called Bro.
He is enthusiastic—some would call him over-excitable—which in terms of crunk is gold, as shouting non-stop is what it’s all about.
Binga also has beady little eyes and an incredible amount of patience when it comes to neurotic paranoiac megalomaniac ginger dudes.
You’re both well-known producers in your own right. What have you been able to do on this album that you felt you couldn’t in your own productions and where did the shared vision originally come from?
Binga: We done some tunes together, and when we realised they had something special we started to think bigger than the singles game. So we joined a dating website, and since then our ho game has been intense.
Ginz: We’ve been able to dress up in furs and fine jewelery, which isn’t really in the 30Hz or Baobinga remit.
What and who were your biggest influences for the album?
Binga: The Runners, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, DJ Toomp, Swizz Beats, The Neptunes, Fleetwood Mac.
Ginz: Lionel Ritchie.
You have a great set of videos to accompany the first three singles. Where did the intergalactic search for crunk concept come from and who did the videos?
Binga: The intergalactic search is a metaphor for two aliens looking to replenish their home planets’ supply of crunk, travelling round the universe and encountering various obstacles such as HoBots and Evil Boss Mans before finding the true essence of crunk.
Ginz: It’s not a very subtle metaphor; that’s pretty much exactly what happens.
There are some great MCs throughout the album such as Goldmouf, Sirplus, Kamikaze, Mr. Smith, Sporty-O, Yolanda etc. But if money was no object who male and female would you bring in to chat and or sing over your sickest rhythms?
Binga: Rick Ross, or The Game. Maybe Plies.
Ginz: Lionel Ritchie
Similar question. If money was no object and you could throw the sickest ever party, who would be performing and DJing?
Binga: Your momma.
Ginz: Lionel Ritchie
Who was the most exciting collaboration to work with on the album? Any crazy late night studio antics going on?
Binga: Yolanda knows how to get down.
During the sessions she came up with the concept of The Bite Job, a skanked out version of the blow job.
We were simultaneously on the floor laughing, and utterly terrified.
Ginz: My favourite was Goldmouf in a fit of rage going round some lazy engineers house to interrupt his chicken eating session to get our vocal stems.
Has the album been well received by your American peers?
Binga: Yeah man, we just found out that iTunes US want to feature the album on the home page and give the single ‘Call Me (feat Sporty-O and Yolanda)’ away so that the masses get lured into our world of crunk.
Ginz: My mom in D.C., dad in New Orleans and sister in Boston all love it.
The album is well-paced with a mixture of club bangers and slow jams. Where is the best place in your opinion to fully enjoy the album in its entirety? And who should be there with you to enjoy it?
Binga: We made the album for the whip, the club, and the crib. It’s enjoyable on a multi-layered level.
Ginz: Lionel Richie’s Arms / Lionel Richie.
Is The Body Snatchers going to be an ongoing project for you both?
Binga: Hell yeah, we finna get that dough, and f*ck with them hos, them ladies that know us know Snatchers be pro.
Ginz: To quote the humble words of Akon “WE TAKING OVER” and in the words of DJ Khalid “WE DA BEST.”
What can we expect from The Body Snatchers over the coming summer?
Binga: Bikini-clad ladies giggling and tottering on high heels while we look on with a self-satisfied smile.
Ginz: Painful introspective and a drinking problem set to Lionel Richie’s ‘All Night Long’.
Any last words and shout outs?
HOODY HOO!!!!!!!!!! (That’s the code of the killers)
The Body Snatchers new album ‘Feeling Good, Looking Nice, Smelling Right’ is out now on Passenger Records along with the single ‘Call Me’ that features remixes from Lee Mortimer, Blende and Backdraft.
