Exclusive Interview with Appart
Exclusive Interview with Appart
10 September, 2008 | 5.07AMProducer Anthony Rouchier aka Appart has set aside some time for his Beatport fans to share with them a little bit about his most recent release, ‘Flamencotronics’ on Milan Records.
What is the concept behind ‘Flamencotronics’? How does it differ from similar albums which take a traditional genre (tango, jazz...) and mix it with electronica?
I guess I just like fusion!
I wanted to create a brand new style mixing the root music as flamenco trying to bring it to the 21th century.
I often focus on an idea or a theme such as Nu tango or Digital western, I like to imagine music as a storyboard, as a movie....I think it’s interesting to make a concept album to tell a story....
Can you describe the producing process of this album? Are there any live elements?
Of course there are a lot a live elements in ‘Flamencotronics’: Guitars, rhythms, vocals and many sounds from the bodies’ of the dancers, such as breath, their clothing, feet.
I think live is the essence of composition, for me electronic is a tool, a powerful tool just here to help you to do what you have on your mind on your own.
Is this your first album?
‘Flamencotronics’ is my first US release but my third studio album (nu tango & digital western), and I’ve done several 12” maxis from breakbeat to break dance and many ballet compositions.
Do you perform live?
I usually perform live.
It depends on the configuration of the stage: Sometimes alone with laptops, machines & key, sometimes with a guitarist, dancers and most of time with a VJ, as I think image and movement are very important in this format nowadays.
What’s the future for ‘Flamencotronics’ and Appart?
For the moment I’m focused on the present.
