Exclusive Brian Arc interview for House.Planet
11 November, 2007 | 11.43AMHouse.Planet caught up with new, young and talented French producer and DJ, Brian Arc
.
His new track, ‘Samplemousse’, was played on Pete Tong’s Fast Trax show on 8th November as the winner of Bedroom Bedlam.
We asked him about his music.
Hi, Brian. Tell us about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from?
Hello House.Planet. I’m Brian, 23 years old and I’m from a town near Paris.
Is Brian Arc your real name?
Brian is real, but Arc is not — but my last name ends with Arc.
That’s all you need to know.
OK. Anyway, it sounds stylish, like Jeanne d’Arc. How and when did you start DJing and producing?
I started DJing in 2001 with two mk2s and a Vestax console.
Three years ago, I sold all of my vinyl and my mk2 and bought an MPC 2000 and a Drumstation.
Now I’m mixing with CDJ 1000s.
So you’re pretty experienced. Are you a resident in any clubs? Where are you playing now?
I’m not playing in a club right now, because I have a very hard job during the week.
On the weekend, I spend most of my time mixing and producing at home, so I don’t have time to DJ at a club.
But three years ago, I was playing in Paris in a club in Lounge Bar (only famous in Paris like La Villa on the Champs Elysees).
What are your favorite genres? Who are your influences in music?
My favorite genres are house, progressive and electro house.
I like many artists, like Chus & Ceballos, Roger Sanchez, Pete Tong and Erick Morillo.
Which are your favorites current tracks?
‘Freshness’ by Simon & Shaker is one of the most played tracks in my CDJ 1000.
Was it a surprise for you when you saw your track on Pete Tong’s Fast Trax show? How did you react on the news?
I discovered it from a comment on MySpace.
I clicked on the link and saw that I was a Bedroom Bedlam winner.
I cried — because it was three years of hard work and production.
And it’s Pete Tong, one of the most famous DJs in the world.
Congratulations again! It’s an awesome tune! When did you send it to the show?
I’m in contact with a label at the moment, and I hope you will hear the track at Miami’s Winter Music Conference.
Why do you think they chose ‘Samplemousse’? And what does the title mean?
It’s a French joke that I can explain to you.
In French, Pamplemouse means Pomelo, so I changed the first letter to S as a joke.
They chose ‘Samplemousse’ because it’s not an ordinary electro track; it sounds like a Spanish Ibizian cut.
How do you describe this track? Do you think it’s your best work?
I have about 150 unfinished projects, because I never finish them, but when I started ‘Samplemousse’, the loop was so nice that I started at 23:00 and finished it at 08:00 morning the next day.
And it’s my best work so far, which is why I believe in it and sent it to Pete Tong.
Did you use any software to make it? Which?
Yes, I sold my MPC 2000 and drum station because production on these kind of machines is very long; you always have to wait, so you lose your ideas because of the loading process.
I’m been with Ableton Live for two years, and I’m using some plugs.
We hope ‘Samplemousse’ will be released soon and that we’ll hear your new works. Do you have a message to your future fans?
Thank you, House.Planet. I’m working on a track now, and I can tell you that you will like it too.
I hope to see them in Ibiza soon.
Hahaha.
Good luck, Brian and we’re sure that you will have huge success.
Thanx, House.Planet.
