Etienne De Crécy does it again with ‘Commercial EP 2’
9 January, 2008 | 1.46PMWhen Etienne De Crecy
burst onto the scene a decade ago with his Super Discount project, the influence of French electronica on dance music up until this point had been confined to Jean Michel Jarre and the racy Euro-disco of Cerrone decades earlier.
Whether EDC and compatriots Daft Punk and St Germain were directly responsible for a starring role and the mass acceptance of Air, Cassius, Bob Sinclar et al is purely subjective; what’s not is their support role in the breaking down of boundaries that would almost certainly be responsible for the later Gallic invasion.
Three years on from brilliant Super Discount 2 that gave us ‘Fast Track’, comes the ‘Commercial EP 2’ on Pixadelic.
It’s another cross-pollination of electro, techno and house with De Crécy the major architect.
Whilst there may not be anything here to rival the aforementioned ‘Fast Track’, ‘Punk’ is another storming instrumental incorporating the neo-classical Daft Punk-like funky bleeps and even fatter basslines.
While the driving ‘Funk’ owes much to Giorgio Moroder but is still equally palatable.
Viva la new wave of French techno.
