Essential tracks for springtime
16 April, 2010 | 12.40PMOh, Miami, how you spoil us. Every year it’s the same: after a week of solar-powered debauchery, most of us head back home, sunburns peeling, and begin counting down the days until our next chance to dance in the open air.
But what better time to start getting one’s crate ready for the balmy days and nights ahead? To that end, we’ve racked our brains and our hard drives to come up with 100 essential tracks for spring. We’ve created 10 charts to suit a variety of moods, styles, and themes, from progressive anthems to Balearic bliss-out.
‘Dancing in the Sun’ is made for daytime raving, with drink (or ice-cream cone) in hand, featuring cuts like Sebo K’s cheery ‘Spirits’ and Floating Points’ sunkissed remix of Four Tet’s ‘Sing’.
‘Disco Beach Party!’ is all about breezy melodies and tempos suited for bare feet on sand, with Aeroplane’s ‘Caramellas’, Tensnake’s ‘Coma Cat’ and other Balearic gems.
‘Late Night Mischief’ takes things a little deeper, from Octave One’s classic ‘Blackwater’ to Isolee’s funk-drenched remix of Recloose’s ‘Cardiology’, while ‘Here Comes the Sun’ brings us back into the morning across a range of solar-powered jams: Roy Ayers’ ‘Sunshine’, John Talabot’s ‘Sunshine’, Blaze’s ‘Lovelee Dae’, Cobblestone Jazz’s ‘Sun Child’, and, of course, Cheek’s 13-year-old ‘Venus (Sunshine People Remix)’.
For the genre aficionados, there’s ‘Warm Weather Trance’, ‘Poolside Progressive Beats’, and the drum & bass-paced ’BPMs that Raise the Temp’; or try out the tribal, Latin and electro flavors of the Miami-inspired ‘Short Kicks and House Music’.
Feel like really busting it out? ‘Tracks for Celebration’ gathers pulse-raising, peaktime cuts from the likes of Josh Wink, Funkagenda, Sebastien Leger, Johnny D. And no picnic, road trip, or skinnydipping session will be complete without the blissed-out house, soul and leftfield pop we’ve culled for ‘Music for BBQs’, featuring Bibio, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Mr. Scruff, Dam-Funk’s dizzy Animal Collective remix, and more.
