Equilibrium
Equilibrium
King Roc [Mutual Society]
4 November, 2008 | 1.19PMConceptual dance music is a rare breed in today’s ‘churn them out and start the next one’ disposable music world, but King Roc
is here to fix that.
Music made with a storyline, ‘Equilibrium’ (and his previous releases on Mutual Society) are future classics, with more in mind than obvious gimmicks simply used to gain chart placement.
Perhaps his experience in the music industry has caused King Roc to grow weary of making tracks just to reach the top of the charts.
A quick search on Discogs.com finds that he was a former member of a breakbeat and techno band, then later an established electro house producer, and now is currently involved as Two Armadillos
(with Giles Smith), alongside of course his exceptional solo work.
With this assorted musical background, it’s no wonder that ‘Equilibrium’ ranges in diversity from an epic big room rocker to an ethereal tech house groover, and then an incredible chill out track specifically for home listening.
Three separate tracks with different sounds, yet a similar musical concept.
While there is nothing wrong with a producer’s goal to be creating best selling chart toppers, it’s sometimes refreshing to hear actual ‘artistry’ as the focus in music, rather than some new track from some big artist that will rock the clubs for two weeks and consequently disappear forever.
Fortunately, this is the type of record that will easily rock the club, and still sounds great as time goes by and genre trends change.
Full of patience, gorgeous melodies, and a dark, gritty and non-stop groove, ‘Equilibrium’ greatly blurs the lines between virtually every style and sound.
It will be one of those records you hear during a fantastic night out and say to yourself: “Wow… what… is this?”
And in my opinion, this is the type of release that should be on top of the charts.
