EP Recommendation: Sapphire by Sami Koivikko

EP Recommendation: Sapphire by Sami Koivikko

Released in late June 2008, this hypnotic EP’s title track called ‘Sapphire’ includes mesmerizing melodies and soft rhythms that lull the listener to another place.

Like an ocean current deep under the surface, this track is full of fortuitous surprises.

With layer upon layer of sound, the track takes an ongoing journey to a place that is unfamiliar yet comforting.

It has a sense of adventure, and yet a simplicity that returns and reminds the listener of something heard before.

This music tells a story like a movie soundtrack. Picture changing scenes from the road or a boat as one travels to uncharted territories and discovers great treasures there.

This is the work of Sami Koivikko [a] who has worked previously on celebrated releases for leibe*detail and Shitkatapult as well as his well known ‘Paajaasa EP’ for Spectral Sound.

Daso and Pawas’ Remix provides a more aggressive techno sound while maintaining the sense of movement found in the original track.

Forever onward and upward, this remix emphasizes the more challenging elements of that heavenly climb.

With heavier claps and a more rigid rather than a fluid structure, this remix is a great one for the dancefloor.

‘Tonalite’ is yet another brilliant work which is a bit deeper and harder and more earthy than it is cerebral or mystically oceanic.

The melodics are more prominent and drive the track forward in a major tone, which further emphasizes the ecstatic and majestic nature of this EP.

Slightly pensive toward the middle, the track resumes force as it continues, always with a sense of optimistic forward movement.

Simply put, this EP is a great one if you like beautiful music that takes you to a thoughtful place where your own thoughts can be heard.
