Ellen Allien reveals her path to techno
10 April, 2007 | 6.29AMTop female DJ Ellen Allien
, who runs one of the world’s biggest techno labels Bpitch Control
, has revealed how she first got hooked on techno.
After becoming disillusioned with Berlin’s hip hop scene, in particular she became sick of being harassed for being a woman in a club, Ellen fell in love with Germany’s burgeoning techno movement.
“The whole (hip hop) scene got on my nerves and I therefore got more interested in electronic music,” she said.
“There were so many interesting people – artists, gay people, freaks – and I felt more connected with all those people.
“And I could finally feel free as a woman in a club – no harassment.”
In 1992 Ellen started working at a bar in Berlin called Fischlabor, whose owner also owned the city’s famous Tresor club.
One day Ellen found herself spinning some records there, and eventually she started her own radio show ‘Braincandy’.
Later she began to spin at E-Werk and Tresor, and soon became a resident DJ at both clubs.
Now she is one of the biggest names in the techno scene.
Ellen Allien’s new mix compilation CD ‘Fabric 34’ is due out in May 2007.
