Electric Independence: Emeralds
Electric Independence: Emeralds
17 March, 2011 | 6.59AMCleveland’s Emeralds—John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt, and Mark McGuire—are the cosmic avengers of contemporary ambient music: taking inspiration from the bubbling, liquid bliss of ‘70s electronic pioneers like Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese, they fuse arpeggiated analog synths and limpid electric guitar into a throbbing, electric mass that goes way beyond ambient’s chillout associations.
Their 2010 album Does It Look Like I’m Here? was one of the year’s experimental highlights, as heady as it was visceral. Now Motherboard.TV catches up with the Cleveland trio for an episode of “Electric Independence,” exploring the group’s roots in the noise scene, their DIY commitment to CDR releases, their live approach, and their fondness for analog synthesis—with lots of droolworthy gear porn to boot.
