Einzelkind Interview

Einzelkind Interview

I would bet that sometime in the past 5 or 6 months, perhaps unbeknownst to you, you have been listening to music produced by Arno Volker and Miguel Ayala. The duo, most commonly known as Einzelkind [a], have recently made waves in the scene with their fresh, elusive new imprint, La Peña. Unmarked, blank vinyl and a consistent ploy of digital secrecy have kept releases from the likes of Reboot, Sascha Dive and Dorian Paic completely under wraps, the collective La Peña moniker helping to re-instigate the importance of high quality, faceless music. This May bank-holiday weekend sees the pair return to London to play a series of well overdue gigs, including an exclusive La Peña Showcase at London’s most talked about new venue, Cable.  Carlos Hawthorn catches up with Einzelkind [a] ahead of their label showcase

Hi Einzelkind [a]. First off how are you and where are you?

Great! We are currently at the studio, a lot!

How has 2010 treated you so far? Looking forward to the summer?

Its been rather quite for us, since we havent released much of our own stuff, but La Peña has been doing really well, with a string of strong releases.

Fascinatingly you’re both from Cuba. Do you ever manage to return and play there?

Not very often and we miss it a lot, especially real cuban rum.

How did you first come across House and Techno music in Cuba? Is it easy to find?

It was hard, but thanks to tourism we met people who gave us tapes and we got kinda hooked on the sound. The producing started here though.

Is there any platform/scene for electronic music on the island?

Currently, we dont know, havent been there for a while. Our connection is mostly family related.

Naturally there is a strong Hispanic influence in your records. Why do you think House and Techno works so well with traditional Latin American music?

We could quote Ricardo, if you listen to samba you will find the same/similar beats and rhythms and monotony is the key to a good groove.

Despite being a duo already, you often collaborate with other artists on tracks, such as Douglas Greed, Meat and recently Nima Gorji. What is it that you enjoy about working with other producers?

If you like the collaborations wait till you hear the tracks done with Christian Burkhardt…

When you produce do you each have specific roles? Is one of you better at some things than the other and vice versa?

Yes, I am the man and he is the woman, apart from that, no.

Why did you want to separate the Einzelkind project from La Pena?

Good question, stupid innit? Well the basic idea was to have a platform where we could “meet” friends and fellow artists. But a new baby is on the way.

When you DJ as Einzelkind [a] do you find that you play a lot of La Pena tracks and vice versa?

Yeah sure. Not so much Einz at the moment, since we have been working mostly on our Album and didnt want to expose these tracks to early.

Is the way you produce very different between one project and the other?

Oh now I understand, La Peña are from different artists, they could be ours, Sascha Dive’s, Martinez’, Reboot’s and from a lot of other artist as well who have contributed to La Peña.

You’re next playing in London for Rhythmatic at Cable on the 1st of May. As it’s a relatively new club I imagine you’ve never played there before. Is it rare that you get to play new places? Is it something you very much enjoy?

I / We enjoy playing everywhere, when there is good crowd and a decent soundsystem.

How would you describe the experience of playing in London? How does it compare to other places?

London is of the hook right now, maybe massive unemployment makes for good parties?!?

What does the 2nd half of 2010 hold in store?

Einzelkind the Album and a new label, which will be something different from what you are used to.....

Thanks and good luck!
