Eddie Halliwell releases debut singles
29 July, 2011 | 2.48AMIt’s been a long time coming, but legendary DJ Eddie Halliwell has finally released his much-anticipated debut single, ”Neon." To celebrate this unification of DJing and producing, he’s also released the first of his “ED-IT” productions – a series of tracks with parts that enable people to remix and re-edit the tracks in the studio or live on stage in their DJ sets. In his 15 years as a DJ, Eddie’s achievements include hosting his own radio show on BBC Radio 1, seven Essential Mixes, and launching his own Fire it Up radio show. We spoke to him to find out why he’s now decided to take the next step in his career and turn his skills to producing…
Eddie Halliwell, “Neon” [FIUR]
You’re known for your incredible DJing skills and have proven that DJs don’t necessarily need to produce to be successful – why have you decided to produce now?
I always set out to be a DJ. When I first came through as a DJ, the production and DJ worlds were completely separate entities to me. I was on the road touring all the time, whereas a producer years ago had to put so much time in the studio at home, which would have been very difficult for me. I never wanted to be one of those DJs who sat in a studio five days a week and then gigged just at weekends. But now, with advances in technology, the equipment I’m using to enhance my DJ performance is also production-based software, so now I can not only use this equipment to enhance my performance on stage, but create my sounds for production whilst touring – so for me the two worlds have now merged.
Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming records?
I’ve got a few projects on the go. My first track from my new “Elements” series, ”Neon," was released on July 25 on Beatport. It’s been doing the damage in my DJ sets since the beginning of summer – I’ve loved road-testing this tune over the last few months and it’s been receiving a fantastic reaction.
How long did it take you to make?
It took quite some time; a period of months messing around with various plug-ins to try to create the sounds I was after.
Who are you really rating for their DJing skills at the moment?
There are lots of skilled DJs that I’ve come across. D.O.D. is a new DJ coming through who uses his skills to really work the crowd. On a production level, I’m really loving Michael Woods – every time I’ve seen him play his tunes out in clubs they really do the damage.
James Zabiela is also a great DJ, but his style is a bit different to yours as he doesn’t ever seem to look up from the decks, whereas you’re more of a performer and interact with the crowd a lot more – is this a conscious decision or does it just come naturally?
It comes naturally. I feed off the crowd – the more mental they are, the more I interact with them and get carried away!
What tune are you really hammering at the moment?
You’ve got to road-test your own tracks, haven’t you? So I’ve been playing “Neon,” “Aether” and “ED-IT-1” to gauge reaction, which has been amazing all over the world. I’m also loving Nari & Milani’s “Kendo” at the moment.

Who are you tipping as the next big thing?
Kryda is definitely one to watch.
You have a residency at Cream Amnesia and Judge Jules’ Judgement Sundays in Ibiza – do you get to do much partying while you’re out there?
Not really as I am usually in and out on to the next gig, but I do have my moments!
What have you got coming up over the next few months?
I literally got back from Ibiza yesterday, tomorrow morning I’m off to Poland for Sunrise Festival, then I’ve got my label launch parties at Mallorca Rocks Hotel, Ibiza Rocks Hotel, Pacha New York, Vision Chicago and The Syndicate in Blackpool. I’ve also got many other amazing gigs, including Creamfields, Global Gathering, Judgement Sundays and Cream Ibiza, which includes a one-off terrace ED-IT stage show on 18th August. As well as the gigs, I’m launching my new label FIUR and I’ve got two more of my own tracks to come over the following months, so it’s all systems go!
