Dubfire talks about ‘Rabid’

Dubfire threatens to suck the US techno scene into his own evil vortex with the release of his new single ‘Rabid’ today.

The dark and throbbing techno cut instantly reminds of his hugely popular remix of Radio Slave and Danton Eeprom’s ‘Grindhouse’, a track that continues to cause devastation wherever it is played.

This week the SCI+TEC boss returned to his home in Washington DC after a breakneck summer tour, and we managed to grab him for five minutes to find out more about his new track.

You’ve just finished a hectic tour. What were the highlights?

I’d have to say that the Exit Festival back-to-back set with Richie Hawtin was a high point of my career. Although it was technically challenging and Rich and I had never played together in that context before, we were both really pleased with the results and hope to do it again in the near future.

I also must admit that the Cocoon Ibiza dates and afterparties were some of my best ever this summer.

‘Rabid’ is your first SCI+TEC release in quite some time. Was this track a long time in the making?

It was an idea that I’d had for many years, especially with the vocal refrain, and it was one of those things that kind of became fully realized over the course of a few studio sessions, in between my busy travel schedule.

I’ve had the chance to really roadtest it for many months now before putting it to bed and I’m quite happy with the result as well as the crowd responses. I hope the fans will embrace it.

You credit BT for the vocal FX on ‘Rabid’.  How did you two work together on this particular track?

Well Brian and I are still very close friends and he’d been telling me about a stutter effect plug-in he has been working on for a while that’s still in its early test stages.

In my head, I’d been imagining how the vocal should be cut up and manipulated so I decided to have him give it a go. When Brian returned the vocal stem with all of these bizarre, scary and unique FX, it became a battle of how much to leave out. Needless to say, I’m very happy with the end results.

Can you tell us more about the promotional video for ‘Rabid’ above?

Human from Sheffield in the UK, are the geniuses behind this video and the entire Dubfire and SCI+TEC visual world. They’ve always managed to re-interpret the music of the label into colors and images, which reflect my vibe.

Should we expect any remixes of ‘Rabid’ in the future?

Well I simply HAD to ask Matt Edwards aka Radio Slave to do a mix which he’s currently working on.

I’ve also been a huge fan of what Tony Scott [Edit Select] has been doing as well, so I’m really excited about hearing his interpretation. The remix package will be out in late October.
