Drunk Lover
Drunk Lover
St. Sebastian [Dessous Recordings]
10 August, 2007 | 8.28AMUK producer St. Sebastian
is only in his early 20s, but he has developed a style that means his work doesn’t belong to the homogenous, bland techno-house sound.
Drunk Lover’ is a sparse, jacking affair, but the slightly detuned, eerie synth sound that gradually unfolds as the track unfolds give it a creepy, almost disturbing feeling.
In as much as we’re vehemently opposed to the notion of music becoming relegated to a soundtrack for hedonism, ‘Lover’ will make most sense to those in an altered state.
However, St Sebastian has to be careful: in this instance, there is a fine line between being inspirational and just plain annoying, and ‘Snow White’ transgresses that invisible border, sounding like a malfunctioning space invader machine that senses its end is near and decides to go out in a blaze of repetitive, bleepy glory.
My My, who seem to be electronic music’s remixers of choice at the moment, make amends for this unappealing oddity with a loose, swinging version of ‘Drunk Lover’.
Swirling, organic chords and hypnotic stabs guarantee that it engages with the listener on a musical level, rather than just providing a means to enhance their manufactured highs.
