Steve Ferrand [Urbantorque]

has steadily become a byword for quality UK house music over the past six years, with a particular highpoint being Harold Heath’s excellent ‘Hole Funk’ LP from the back end of last year.
The label itself claims Steve Ferrand
’s second outing for them as a return “to it’s proper house music roots”, which is probably a fair assessment overall.
We are presented with four tracks of carefully crafted deep house goodness, with varying tones of light and shade to suit the mood.
‘The Music’ firstly, evokes a feeling of warmth and comfort like being wrapped in a big electric blanket.
A brooding bass-end and portly keys get down to a beat that’s more likely to be beach than bar.
‘All Night’ faces in the direction of the dance floor a little more with spiky bass, diminutive vocal snippets and waves of tense melody gathering as the track evolves.
‘Dreamer’ is an interesting little number showing a touch of versatility to Ferrand’s range.
A ‘French Kiss’ style synth skank is wrapped around a distorted speech sample on the subject of dreams, giving a wonderfully disorientated and wonky feel to things.
Finally, ‘Getting There’ sounds like some lost, laid back cut from the early ‘90s with delicate keys and dreamy pads that if held up to the light, would probably glisten.
