4 January, 2012 | 6.01AMIt’s a good day for free music! Atom Heart and Vicente Sanfuentes (Original Hamster), aka Surtek Collective, are giving away a free download of their New Year’s Eve set from Santiago, Chile, and it’s required listening for fans of acid, reggaetón, moombahton and other gritty, global club sounds.
Check it out after the jump, and discover the duo’s excellent album The Birth of Acitón, which established the template for moombahton way back in 2007.

If you’re not familiar with Surtek Collective, here’s a quick rundown: the project was born in the mid ‘00s as the brainchild of Uwe Schmidt (Atom Heart, aka Señor Coconut and dozens of other aliases), a German producer long based in Chile; an extension of his growing interest in reggaetón, the Surtek Collective proposed fusing reggaetón rhythms with acid squelch. Voilá: the birth of acitón. (The name was a cheeky swipe at Mexico’s Nortec Collective, who a few years before had begun fusing electronic beats with Mexican regional styles.)
They’re primarily known as a live outfit—one of their most triumphant moments came at Montreal’s MUTEK festival in 2005, when they replaced an absent Ricardo Villalobos with an impromptu set played on borrowed hardware, all programmed just hours before they took the stage.
The duo released one album on Schmidt’s Rather Interesting label, 2007’s The Birth of Acitón; moombahton fans looking to fill their crates with more 110-BPM beats would be highly advised to cherry-pick its 21 tracks.
