‘Don’t Make Me Wait 2007’ Remixes released
12 October, 2007 | 8.06AMWay back when dance knew no musical segregation by genre, a pioneering visionary named Larry Levan laid the foundations with a record that would rewrite the rule book and define a new era.
Of all the classic remixes to bare his name, his quintessential sound and perfectionism was epitomized by one record in particular: the New York Citi Peech Boy’s ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’.
In a rare production outing, Levan honed the electro-disco collective that was comprised of Michael de Benedictus (a synthesiser player who often jammed alongside him in the DJ booth at The Paradise Garage), guitarist Robert Kasper and the hauntingly dramatic tones of vocalist Bernard Fowler.
It’s said that Levan took a whole year to complete the final mix down, but in 1982, the end result heard Fowler’s absorbing a cappella cries over crisp hi-hat claps.
It backs one of the most endearing and over-sampled records in dance music’s history.
25 years on, DJ Dove created a bootleg that so impressed Open Bar Music to commission a slew of additional mixes to match.
Fellow New Yorkers Davidson Ospina & Oscar P add a soulful undercarriage; Jordan Rivera chunky beats; Javi Lopez swing chords and funky bass; and Angel Manuel a darker Mr Fingers-esque feel to Fowler’s timeless cries.
Classic stuff!
