Djuma Soundsystem and VHS or Beta @ Heineken Green Room March 28th

Electro tinged power pop from VHS or Beta, minimally driven electronica from Djuma Soundsystem and the energetic beat constructions of Box Frenzy make for an ideal music mash-up at Heineken Green Room on March 28th at ODC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

With the buzz already building around the imminent release of Green Room State of Mind, a 20-minute short film by director Edwin Raj chronicling the electronic music scene in Malaysia, Heineken Green Room returns with a super-charged line-up of electro pop, twisted electro grooves and a heavy dose of breaks and beats. On Saturday March 28th at ODC leading US electro-poppers VHS or Beta make their Malaysian debut alongside one of the electronic underground’s most exciting live acts, Sweden’s Djuma Soundsytem, with local flavour coming from Box Frenzy, the newly rebranded B4C, whose ability to deconstruct dance floor favourites on the fly has seen them consistently lauded as one of Malaysia’s most innovative live electronic acts.

Heineken Green Room:
Date: Saturday March 28th, 2009.
Time: 9.00pm – 2.00am
Venue: ODC (aka Orange Dance Club, 1 Jalan Kia Peng, 50450 KL

Green Room has ramped up another gear for this stellar event on March 28th. Prefaced by Edwin Raj’s Green Room State of Mind (which can be viewed online at www.heineken.com.my from March 1st), a visual narrative that is striving to get to the very centre of the emotion and passion that lies at the heart of Malaysia’s electronic scene, the film is iconic proof of Heineken’s commitment to the personalities behind the development of this eclectic and fast-moving scene.

Which explains the presence of the twin talents of VHS or Beta and Djuma Soundsystem at Green Room at ODC on March 28th. VHS or Beta leapt to the heart of the electro-punk movement in 2004 with the singles ‘You Got Me’ and ‘Night on Fire’. Taking the underground fuzzed up electro-funk sound of acts like Radio 4 and Clinic, the Louisville Kentucky-based three-piece who formed in 1997, add layers of 80s pop sheen to form a floor bending blend of electro pop dance grooves. Think a harder rocking version of The Killers crossed with Duran Duran and you’ll be on the right track.

Which is the sound they’ll be bringing with them on their Malaysian debut at Green Room. 2007’s album Bring All the Comets cemented their up and coming reputation with plaudits from publications like Blender and Rolling Stone, while the dance floor tilted mixes of anthemic single ‘Burn It All Down’ by the likes of Surkin, Fred Falke and Midnight Juggernauts reinforced a position in the wider club community forged by earlier mixes of the band’s tracks by Cut Copy and the Juan Maclean. So, on March 28th expect a seamless blend of catchy power pop, impassioned vocals and driving beats to get feet moving.

Continuing Heineken Green Room’s live theme is Djuma Soundsystem. Already the darlings of the Lapsap and Vice Modern Disco set, the Danish duo’s sound bridges the worlds of electro, techno and minimal house. Their awesome minimally driven single ‘Les Djinns’ is online electronic music retailer Beatport’s (www.beatport.com) biggest selling track ever, and the #1 successes of follow-ups ‘This Sound’ and ‘Attila EP’ saw the band propelled into the big leagues of the 2008 festival and club circuit, as well as releasing tracks for labels including Neutone, Toolroom Records and IO Records.

Whether DJing or mashing up their sound live, Djuma Soundsystem have won a reputation for moving rooms big and small. That includes career making clubs like London’s The End, Ghent’s Vooruit as well as huge festivals like Denmark’s Roskilde, and playing to an unimaginable 50,000 people at the Ukraine’s Free Fat Festival, an energy they’ll be showing off at their live performance for Green Room.

And of course, no Heineken Green Room would be complete without the inclusion of some premier class local talent, this time in the shape of Box Frenzy (formerly B4C), the beat deconstructionists who rocked Heineken Music presents Impulse in 2006 and who also made a major impact on Heineken’s still talked about Thirst Studio competition.

Re-formed around a nucleus of No.4’s percussion inspiration and live fills and Blastique’s Ableton-based DJ nous, their live set will see their trademark energy being translated to the Heineken Green Room main stage, where they will build, strip and reconstruct classic dancefloor tracks and a mixture of original material with cheeky flair, as well as a more traditional set from the DJ booth which will showcase Blastique’s much vaunted ability to turn any dance floor on its head.
