DJs decend on Vancouver for Winter Olympics
17 February, 2010 | 1.12PMVancouver, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, not only played host to the world’s best athletic talent this month, but to some of the world’s biggest DJs as well.
As the city braced itself for a couple of hundred thousand extra visitors, it counted the likes of Paul van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Benny Benassi, Marcus Schulz, Steve Angello, Deadmau5, Stanton Warriors, Lee Burridge, Danny Howells, Calvin Harris, and Gareth Emery, to name a few, amongst its guests.
The normally quiet Canadian city, known more for its beautiful scenery and wet winters, has been accused in the past of being “no-fun”, a label it hoped to shake during the two weeks of festivities. Local promoters booked 18 straight days of DJs.
Unsurprisingly, the big name trance jocks were called upon, as they tend to draw the largest crowds. However, there was a little something for everyone as the Stanton Warriors kicked off the festivities early on February 11th, while German trance DJ Paul van Dyk
headlined elsewhere on the same day.
MSTRKRFT and Chris Lake played after the opening ceremonies with Benny Benassi and LMFAO rounding out the weekend. Other notable DJ gigs included Dubfire
and a very special back to back show featuring Lee Burridge and Danny Howells at Shine, one of city’s smaller venues.
Canada’s most famous dance son Deadmau5 is due to perform at the Whistler closing ceremony tomorrow.
