DJ Dan’s timeless Weekend Weapons
DJ Dan’s timeless Weekend Weapons
5 November, 2009 | 5.44AMUS house hero DJ Dan
first stepped behind the decks in 1989, and 20 years later he’s still putting out dancefloor slammers for energetic mainrooms.
Take the first single from his new album ‘DJ Dan presents Future Retro: Evolution 1’, which dropped this week. Included are two filthy electro house jams, ‘Can You Feel It’ and ‘Drop Hits’ (a collaboration with fellow electro house trouble maker Hatiras), which are full of supreme disco gusto.
But what makes DJ Dan special, as anyone who has seen him play live will testify, is the fact that his DJ sets are always full of classic sounding house jams that would appear to be timeless.
Far too broad in scope to be caught up in the trivialities of trends, DJ Dan’s music is always peak time, thoroughly accessible, and downright fun.
As a testament to this, we asked Dan to choose his current Weekend Weapons, and he gave us eight cuts that sound as good today, as they did yesteryear.
DJ Dan’s Weekend Weapons
DJ Technique ‘My Definition’ (Loftin’ Lucas Remix) [Mob]
This is as classic “funky house” as it gets! I put this on my ‘Beats 4 Freaks’ CD back in the day.
DJ Sneak originally gave me this record, and it was my secret weapon for years. This track always gets the crowd hyped!
Global Communication ‘The Way’ (Original Mix) [NRK]
There are some tracks that seem to strike a chord with everyone, no matter what style of music you are into. I absolutely love this track and it always gets the crowd going.
Coburn ‘Give Me Love’ (Original Mix) [Great Stuff Recordings]
Tim Healy and Pete Martin did absolute genius work together as Coburn. ‘Give Me Love’ is one of those infectious grooves that can make you feel like you are on ecstasy the second you hear it.
I love it also because it is reminiscent of Donna Summer ‘I Feel Love’, which was produced by my all time hero Giorgio Moroder in 1977.
DJ Delicious ‘Stay Around For This’ (DJ Delicious & Till West Remix) [Milk & Sugar]
DJ Delicious and Til West turned Milk & Sugar’s track into an amazing mix of Latin beats, female vocals, and rocking electro bass.
This makes for a massive floor filler.
DJ Dan & Hatiras ‘Baked From Scratch’ (Dub Mix) [Blow Media]
I had to include this one. It was the first track Hatiras and I ever did together. I just remember sampling records, getting drunk and having a great time!
You can really hear it in the tune as well. Fun funky house made just for shaking your ass!
Saeed Younan ‘Backroom Honey’ (Original Mix) [Viva Music]
Another amazing track on Viva Music. Wicked tribal tech house tune and funky as hell. I played this at Pacha’s 16 Year Anniversary party in Buenos Aires and had at least three people ask about it. Slamming!
Zodiac Cartel ‘Beyond The Dancefloor’ (Original Mix)
ZC consistently pumps out the jams. This is a massive tech funk tune using a dark funky electro bassline and old school rave piano stabs.
Ou Est Le Swimming Pool ‘Dance The Way I Feel’ (Krafty Kuts Re-Rub)
This is by far the best high energy disco house track out at the moment. On top of it all, Krafty Kuts takes the track to yet another level by adding sick breaks and dope effects to the mix.
This is the biggest track I have in my set right now.
