DJ chart: Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry

DJ chart: Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry

He sang ‘Don’t Stop the Dance’ in 1985, and 25 years later Bryan Ferry still lives those words, if his debut DJ chart is anything to go by.

Yes that’s right, the frontman of endearing English glam rock band Roxy Music, the suave chap that declared ‘Let’s Stick Together’, the cool cat that moaned ‘More Than This’, the original Electric Lounge Lizard of London, has uploaded a DJ chart to Beatport!

Anyone who knows Roxy Music won’t be surprised to learn that Bryan Ferry is a keen follower of contemporary electronica.

His band helped pave the way for many new wave acts and experimental electronic groups of the late 1970s and early ‘80s, thanks in part, to the group’s Brian Eno, who was one of the principal innovators of synthesizer-based ambient and avant-garde electronic music.

So which artists interest Ferry today? As expected, they’re from the more song-based, musical edge of the scene. In his chart are producers such as Lindstrom, DFA’s Still Going, Norway’s Todd Terje, and London’s Padded Cell.

There are a number of surprises, however. Who for instance, would have guessed that Bryan Ferry was a fan of Klang’s electro rockers Alter Ego, or the relatively unknown Spanish breakbeat producer Digital Base?

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bryan Ferry chart without one or two vocal treats from the big man himself, and included is a brilliant new Roxy Music remix by hot producer Cinnamon Chasers, as well as Simian Mobile Disco’s dark techno rework of DJ Hell and Ferry’s brand new single ‘U Can Dance’ (out this week, with some stupendous Carl Craig and Tim Goldsworthy remixes).

All in all, it’s safe to say that a quarter of a century on, Bryan Ferry is still rocking out.
