Disco T
Tom Neville [Love Minus Zero]
7 May, 2008 | 10.29AM- Section: Music Reviews Topics: Beatport Blog
The title track on this release, ‘Sick’, is a crazed techno mutation full of dismembered audio experiments.
But we’ll leave that review to our techno God for now, because this one is looking purely at Tom Neville’s tasty electro house productions.
‘Disco T’ can wear its electro house T-shirt proudly because it doesn’t conform to current trends whatsoever.
Its beats are dull, but not in a bad way – we’re talking in terms of colour – they’re more about the low frequencies than the sharp cutting tones so often associated with modern electro house.
And bass = soul, which is always a good thing for house heads.
On top of these fat, bassy beats lies a wonderfully minimalist composition that is all about the music, not showy technical gymnastics.
As such, you can expect anyone listening to ‘Disco T’ in your DJ set to nod their heads until their necks ache.
The ’80s-themed “Police Academy” strings in ‘Disco T’ are the key to its irresistibly funky vibe, as are its subliminally filtered, dirty arpeggiators and retro synthesised tom drums.
Don’t forget to check ‘East In The City Too’, which is an addictively dark pursuit of dance music’s most coveted secrets.
Expect progressive use of distortion and stereo effects on this killer track.
