Terrence Dixon [Underline]

Terrence Dixon [a] is probably the most underrated techno producer in the world.

He has worked with Juan Atkins producing his Infiniti album ‘Skynet’, was responsible for the seminal ‘Minimalism’ series, and made one of the best techno albums of all time, the sleekly futuristic tones of 2000’s ‘From The Far Future’ on Tresor.

As is most Detroit techno producers’ wont, Dixon disappeared for a few years, but is now enjoying something of a comeback, which so far has yielded a wild, jazz-fuelled album, ‘Train of Thought’ for Andy Vaz’s Yore, and now this release for Underline [l].

Those familiar with the London label may be surprised by its sudden, unexpected switch from mnml into something more abstract and, let’s be honest, more adventurous than usual.

Only the sonic pointilist approach of ‘Order of Operations’ has dance floor appeal, but the shuddering keys on the electro boogie ‘In Flight’ as well as the wide screen break beats of ‘Directions’ achieve that otherwordly quality that so few techno records can.

Seven years on since he released his masterpiece, it’s clear that Dixon is still working from an undefined place in the far future.

Maybe it’ll help him get as much recognition as contemporaries like Rob Hood or Dan Bell.
