Time flies in the super-kinetic world of drum & bass.
Originally released in 2006, Sub Focus’ ‘Swamp Thing’ smashed dance venues to smithereens, and it seems like yesterday.
‘Swamp Thing’ is a sludgy, personal composition by Sub Focus in a style that he has since progressed from (featured in his ‘Aliens remix’ and ‘Airplane’ classics) so if you haven’t got it yet, listen and decide whether or not your collection needs some boost power.
Memories of Andy C bludgeoning the dance floor without remorse with ‘Swamp Thing’ will come flooding back - just press play!
The haunting, hooky melody signals the arrival of the ‘Swamp Thing’ in mix, and when it drops, expect a seesaw combination of teeth-grinding mid bass and mid effects, proceeded by deadly sine and square bass bombs.
It’s classic.
If you hadn’t noticed, you’ve also got a Hive & Keaton remix of Moving Fusion’s timeless anthem ‘The Beginning’.
But the original could never be topped, even if Andy C, Dillinja, Pendulum, Fresh, Calibre and Total Science collaborated on the remix.
So, Hive & Keaton wisely keep their lick faithful to what has gone before.
It’s more staccato than the wall-of-sound structure evident in Moving Fusion’s original, featuring some interesting vocal stabs, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
Moving on, ‘Fly Away Home’ by Concord Dawn is hyperactive tech-step at its finest.
A harsh, panic-stricken plate with an admirably outrageous Reece lead, the darkness in ‘Fly Away Home’ is spliced with some expertly-produced bridges that are liquidy and ambient in texture.
This contrast works wonders, creating a brilliant whole worthy of any drum & bass collection.
Finally, we’ve got ‘The Bypass’ by Culture Shock.
This is very different than all the other songs on the ‘Dimensions 2’ EP, in that it’s not a traditional roller, and has more of a stepped vibe.
It’s one of those hypnotic, unnerving pieces of music best reserved for paranoid weed heads, complete with hollow, coarse bleeps that provide light for moths following its bleak but addictive vibe.
