Roman Rai [Solstice]

Czech producer Roman Rai takes a breather from his recent string of progressive leaning numbers, treading a more traditional house route on the one-tracked ‘Digitalis’ release for his own label Solstice.

This is by no means a huge departure from the sound he has pushed steadily into our consciousness since 2002.

On this occasion, Rai demands that the listener dances side-to-side as opposed to up and down.

A thumping kick and arpeggiated bass line reveals the track’s dance floor credentials without any hesitation.

The direction is cemented further by an expansive, trance-like lead line that runs neatly alongside the lower frequency elements.

A gently squeezed and delayed sine wave is summoned to provide further enforcement of the lead, giving the track an extra melodic dimension.

Lashings of compression and reverb are smothered over everything, giving a digital polish, which may not be to everyone’s liking.

The chord pattern displayed would suggest Rai has sufficient musical know-how, but it feels a touch out of date in its execution.

In summary, this is a competently produced and slick number, which if anything suffers slightly from a lack of real depth or character; the human touch that is present in the best electronic productions seems to have gone astray.
