While minimal techno is based on the ‘less is more’ maxim, few producers manage to live up to this ideal.
Instead, the past few years have seen a deluge of ‘less is less’ releases, studio outtakes based on hamster’s fart beats and layers of FX that attempt to disguise that nothing is going on.
However, there are exceptions, and Par Grindvik’s label has been representing stripped-back techno with a forceful attitude.
The latest release comes from Simon Haydo, who is apparently a close friend of the label owner.
It shows just how powerful a few basic elements sound when properly arranged and mastered correctly.
On ‘Spinal’, a murky bass surges through the speakers, underpinned by heavy drums and a resonating bleep that gradually morphs into an outer space frequency borrowed from a UR record.
Finally, after a few minutes, Haydo drops a wall of hissing percussion that propels the track onto a new driving height.
‘Under Down’ is less propulsive, but once again, Haydo’s arranging is imaginative, combining doubled up beats, some smart breaks samples and a growling bass to create an unusual hybrid.
Consisting of just a handful of elements, both tracks prove that talent rather than technology will always prevail.
