We interviewed the duo in Geneva, where we talked at length about music and the new minimal and house trends. We also talked about their latest production “Die Spirale Weiter”, putting various questions to Damian Deroma and Ganeshaâ, the DJ producers behind the “WirSind” project.
Arteria: Why did you choose the name “Die Spirale Weiter” ?
WirSind: The name has a double meaning. While it is our way of emphasising the continuation of our productions, it also aims to “hypnotise” the listener, drawing them into a “spiral” of new and original sound and visual emotions.
A: Let’s talk about “Another Jesus"… Is it a title representing a desire, a hope for a better tomorrow? The choice of sounds brings to mind various French-style lounge productions while remaining minimal at the same time. Is there one artist in particular who inspired you in the creation of this track?
WS: We chose the name “Another Jesus” because our aim is to introduce a new genre of music into the usual, commercial music channels; one increasingly involving a mass culture, one which is different and more open mentally.
Our search for sounds for this track came from a desire to make various aspects of minimal music more “human” and less “synthetic”. Our record collection is pretty big, so it’s difficult to choose one single artist that we were particularly inspired by when creating the track!
A: “Des Souvenirs Part 2” strongly echoes the productions by Marco Carola and Villalobos. What do you think? Do you agree?
WS: Yes, we would certainly agree. Just as for Carola and Villalobos, the depth and “texture” of the sound in relation to the groove is very important to us. It is a great honour to be compared with artists who we love and respect. It gives us a lot of hope for our own musical future!
A: “Sonos Spherae” is perhaps the most sophisticated track on the EP in terms of the choice of sounds. The filter used on the synth in particular reflects the title very well. If we close our eyes we can actually see the “sphere” of the title, in perfect harmony with the bpm of the track. Perhaps a rather visionary statement, but just as some see certain sounds as corresponding to different colours, have you ever realised a production where you wanted to give the sensation of a specific image? The voice on the track is a spoken comment which almost takes us back to the late Eighties, when the break out style and various live motifs by Kraftwerk were popular. What are your thoughts?
WS: Your description of “Sonos Spherae” is very accurate. We should also add that when we were putting together this track, we had the very real sensation of living a visual and sound experience through the creative use of the synthesiser. I would define our sounds as geometrical forms rather than colours, while the inclusion of the spoken voice was very deliberate because we wanted to describe certain passages using a simple yet direct comment.
It is a surprise for us to learn that you heard Eighties’ influences in our music, because we feel more closely represented by more recent music. In any case it is an added value for us, one for which we have great respect.
WirSind is a highly personal musical project, both artistically and stylistically, whose talented co-authors, eccentric souls Damian and Ganeshaâ, have come together to share and spread their vision of electronic music in the third millennium.
