DFA signs Bruno Pronsato, Ricardo Villalobos
17 August, 2010 | 3.49AMHere’s one you weren’t expecting. Ricardo Villalobos
is about to turn up on DFA Records
!
No, they haven’t released his 467-minute long mashup of Manuel Gottsching’s ‘E2-E4’ with an albino Gamelan ensemble. (You haven’t heard that yet? Shame.) And no, Villalobos hasn’t gone all disco on us.
The record in question is by NDF, a new alias of Bruno Pronsato
and Sergio Giorgini (of the duo Benoit & Sergio, who recorded last year’s ‘What I’ve Lost’ EP on Pronsato’s Thesongsays label). While NDF’s track definitely bears Pronsato’s liquid, percussive signature, it’s also a departure for the Berlin-based musician, with full vocals and an unexpectedly pop touch.
The Villalobos remix is very Villalobos, full of his trademark burble and squelch. But it’s also the most relatively straightforward Villalobos has sounded in a while, a little tougher and more linear than many of his recent reworks.
“I am a huge fan [of Pronsato’s work],” DFA label manager Jonathan Galkin told Beatportal. “I basically talked him into trying to make a 12-inch that ‘sounds like it could be on DFA,’ whatever that means—which is the fun part, I guess. Then I dared him to go knock on Ricardo’s door and get a remix made. Three weeks later, it arrived. Both worked!”
The single is out August 30, and we can’t wait for the indie-dance blogosphere’s reaction. We’re putting money on a new genre for 2011: minimal chillwave.
