Deep house update (17 Sept 2007)

Welcome to the first installment of Deep House Update, a new blog on Beatportal that covers the deeper shades of dance music.

Everything from deep house to acid house, space disco to Detroit techno, funk and soul, and everything in between.

We’ll also explore classic house and the mighty Chicago, Philly, and NYC sounds that still influence the neo/retro trends in dance music today.

We’ll follow new developments in the scene and even cover a few quality events in between.

Check back weekly as we’ll keep you informed of the latest tracks and ones that you might have missed on Beatport (listen to all the tracks in the player below). Time to get deep.

Waldeck ‘Midsummer Night Blues’

The dynamic duo known as Waldeck has a new album out titled ‘Ballroom Stories’ that’s just genius.

Fusing old ragtime, blues & jazz with futuristic electronic funk, envisions modern DJs timewarped to the 1920s, booked to play after hour get-togethers in Harlem speakeasies.

Stand out track: Waldeck ‘Midsummer Night Blues’

Solid Gold Playaz ‘Gold Groove 2007’

From Jordan Fields and his continuing re-edit series, 66 Records pulls out another unreleased gem that’s a bit of a techy and deep delight.

Warm, sampled sounds over chuggy beats that fit around a funky loop, show just how golden this track really is.

Stand out track: ‘Gold Groove 2007’ (Unreleased Jordan Fields Reedit)

Bob Marley & The Wailers ‘400 Years’ (Jimpster Remix)

Bruno Guez’s, Quango, teams up with Tuff Gong to release an excellent remix album paying respect to reggae legends, Bob Marley & The Wailers.

Most tracks feature new grooves from the top downtempo/hip-hop beatmasters of today, but it’s Jimpster’s remix of ‘400 Years’ that’s the stand out jam for the dancefloors.

Deep, techy, dubby and driving, Jah live within dread.

Rob Roy ‘A Killer In My Mind’

Glendale, Arizona might become a new focal point for the West Coast deep house scene, if Gateway Recordings keep releasing quality beat like this.

Along with Florida vocalist Rob Roy, all four remixers deliver a stellar effort in deep, funk glory. More please.

Stand out track: Rob Roy ‘A Killer In My Mind’ (Anthony Molina Mix)

Andre Lee ‘Soul Agent’

Andre Lee has a new track on the ‘Mix This In Volume 1’ album called ‘Soul Agent’.

Bright, cut-up horns sit on top of a solid beat and bassline that’s in similar vein to classic Kerri Chandler grooves.

It’s just a real nice groove.

Stand out track: Andre Lee ‘Soul Agent’ (Original Mix)

Kerri Chandler ‘All I Have Is This Feeling’

Speaking about Kerri Chandler, check out the latest joint on his label Grei Matter.

Nice, fluid and deep moog synths over jacking Jersey beats that’ll make good for those super late night sessions.

Stand out track: Kerri Chandler ‘All I Have Is This Feeling’ (Instrumental Mix)

Cool label: Hi Fi Terapi

Dug deep into the Beatport bins and found a label with a really unique sound - think they might be out of Norway, but could be wrong.

No matter, wherever they’re from, everything they have put out so far is just absolutely amazing.

‘Lucy Said’ sounds like a modern Level 42 jazz track that was custom made for a Chicago deep house club. Excellent.

Stand out track: Fenomenon Fredahk ‘Lucy Said’

Allen Hoist ‘With Love’

Parisian jazz vocalist Allen Hoist gets the remix treatment for his latest song, ‘With Love’ from a bevy of producers like Franck Roger, Greg Gauthier, and Tony L.

Raw Deal drops the best mix in my book though. An electronic afro-funk groove that’s deep and dubby - just perfect on the floor.

Stand out track: Allen Hoist ‘With Love’ (Dubbed With Love by Raw Deal)

Mr. J ‘Calling Out’

Goya Music’s new upstart label Askew are off to a great start with their first release on Beatport.

Mr. J drops tight, syncopated lyrics over a jackin’ jazz groove, courtesy of Zed Bias’ alter ego, Maddslinky.

Definitely need to dig deep on this.

Stand out track: Mr. J ‘Calling Out’ (Maddslinky Remix)

Little Big Bee ‘K.G.O. (Jazztronik Remix)

Japan’s Jazztronik completely hit the nail on its head with their remix of “K.G.O.”

Possibly being the love child of ‘Sandcastles’ and ‘Knights Of The Jaguar’, this deep, Detroit techno, peak-hour hit could do some serious damage in the right hands.

Investigate immediately!

Stand out track: Little Big Bee: ‘K.G.O.’ (Jazztronik Remix)
