Deep house update (11 Oct 2007)
11 October, 2007 | 2.01PMBack into the trenches where only the funky, soulful and deep reside. Check out what’s new in this week’s selection of the hottest deep house available on Beatport.
As always, you can check out all the tracks I ‘big up’ in the player below.
Ursula Rucker ‘Untitled Flow’
Working previously with diverse artists such as Josh Wink, 4 Hero and The Roots, Philly beat poet Ursula Rucker
lends her always impressive word play this time around to house legend Louie Vega.
Sonically lacing sonnets over Louie’s chunky acid-influenced beats makes this a funk filled lesson in Ursula’s world. Get some education.

Lopazz ‘Play In My House’
When first I heard of Lopazz
, he had just released his self-titled EP on the genius but short-lived Output Recordings.
And with his new album on Get Physical, it’s good to see that Stefan Eichinger has kept his music just as refreshingly quirky — yet brilliantly funky — as it was back then.
‘Kook Kook’ is his amazing new album that interestingly hits on all marks, but it’s ‘Play In My House’ that works best for this blog.
Stand out track: Lopazz ‘Play In My House’ (Original Mix)
Mayaka ‘Taking Chances’
Japanese label Outergaze does it again by giving us an absolutely quality deep house selection.
Though not from Japan themselves, the Belgian trio known as Mayaka make some seriously downright funky tracks.
‘Taking Chances’, which oddly reminds me somewhat of Tantra’s disco classic, ‘Hills of Katmandu’, is my favorite pick of the bunch.
I’d love to hear this on a large, well designed soundsystem. You should too.
Stand out track: Mayaku ‘Taking Chances’ (Original Mix)
Michelle Amador ‘Because Of You’
Simply one of the illest labels around at the moment, Liverpool’s Sick Trumpet coughs up their latest infection, ‘Because Of You’.
This time they go the way of Brooklyn with an excellent vocal from Jazz chanteuse Michelle Amador
.
All mixes are outstanding, but it’s Osunlade’s Yoruba Soul mix which is the best remedy for a sick dancefloor.
Stand out track: Michelle Amador ‘Because Of You’ (Yoruba Soul Mix)
Terry Hunter feat. Terisa Griffin ‘Wonderful’
Chicago hero Terry Hunter’s recent hit ‘Wonderful’ has been a favorite in certain DJs’ sets recently.
Kenny Dope takes a swing on remixing it and comes out with something completely different.
Gone are the uplifting sounds of Terry’s original and in its place is a deep, tech house influenced jaunt.
Kenny’s tough as nails percussion is present, but his darker yet still soulful chords are aimed for those late night rooms who just want to keep dancing.
Stand out track: Terry Hunter
feat. Terisa Griffin ‘Wonderful’ (Kenny Dope Main Mix)
Steve & I ‘Comeandgetme’
Amp Fiddler, Delano Smith, and even the mighty Jamie Odell have all called Still Music home at one time or another.
Jerome Derradji has always showcased an impressive collection off his label and his latest offering is just as good.
Steve & I
sound similar to a band comprised of robots, programmed to play funk and soul in an eclectic 2-step format.
‘Comeandgetme’ would be great to fit in those early night sets.
Stand out track: Steve & I ‘Comeandgetme’ (Original Mix)
Marcus Worgull ‘Under The Sycamore Tree’
Marcus Worgull
has been releasing a consistent stream of quality tracks on Berlin’s soon to be legendary label, Innervisions.
His latest EP titled ‘Spellbound’ is no exception to Innervisons’ always forward thinking, modern take on deep house.
The plucky, funky, almost traditional Asian chord structure plays around the tempo in that glowing, Ame ‘Rej’ kind of way.
If this is where deep house is heading, then I’ll gladly follow.
Stand out track: Marcus Worgull ‘Under The Sycamore Tree’ (Original Mix)
Scope ‘All Night Long’
Ric McClelland returns once again with his Scope
moniker to make more of that warm, engulfing house sound that we’re gladly growing accustomed to.
‘All Night Long’ is a perfect example of this. With its flowing, echoed keys and tough but steady drums, his new effort on Urbantorque doesn’t disappoint.
Stand out track: Scope ‘All Night Long’ (Original Mix)
Andrew Weatherall ‘Sci.Fi.Lo.Fi. Vol.1’
From Sabers Of Paradise to Two Lone Swordsmen (and even as way back as the early acid house days of the UK), Andrew Weatherall
has always been on the cusp of injecting new ideas into dance music.
It’s no surprise that his new 60 minute DJ mix presented by Soma still shows that he’s not afraid to throw us a curveball.
Proto punk, early goth, homemade R&B, London glam and even some drugged-out rockabilly are all present in his selection.
It was probably spun off 45s which he discovered whilst helping his parents clean out their attic.
This isn’t deep house by any means, but it definitely has tons of soul, which is what this blog is all about.
Licensing this stuff must have been pure joy.
Stand out track: Andrew Weatherall ‘Sci.Fi.Lo.Fi. Vol.1’ (continuous DJ mix)
Sterling Void ‘It’s Alright’
Acuna Boyz Productions have just released a ton of classics from Chicago’s Sterling Void
.
A fan of that era would want to look into their whole history with the entire catalog, but I wanted to point out one of their all time dancefloor favorites, ‘It’s Alright’.
The original was by Marshall Jefferson, so you know you can’t go wrong.
