Deadmau5 to soundtrack MTV VMAs
17 August, 2010 | 2.35AMMTV has announced that Deadmau5
will serve as the “house artist” at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, to be broadcast on Sunday, September 12.
“But wait, you ninnies!” you say. “Deadmau5 doesn’t play house, he plays electro-house.” (Or progressive, whatever—it’s getting harder and harder to tell.)
But MTV isn’t talking about Deadmau5’ genre, they’re talking about his job, which makes the whole thing even weirder. Like Paul Shaffer on David Letterman (or perhaps the Muppet Band on the Muppet Show), Deadmau5 will actually serve as the in-house entertainment for the night.
“As the house artist,” explains a press release, “Deadmau5 will serve as the musical maestro for the duration of the show and will create original remixes from a variety of artists including live musical guests.”
“It’s a wicked honor and privilege to do whatever the hell it is I am doing at the 2010 VMA’s, and I am super stoked,” says Deadmau5, clearly unfazed by the vagueness of his job description. (We’re pretty sure it’s a little like being a Bar Mitzvah DJ.)
Someone, clearly, thinks that Deadmau5 is primed for some mainstream crossover success: he’s also been named a “PUSH” artist of the week for August 16,whatever that means—a title that has previously been held by artists like Jason Derulo, Trey Songz, Drake, Phoenix, and Florence and the Machine.
What should we expect from Deadmau5’s VMAs appearance? We have no idea, to be honest: will he cart his massive modular system up on stage? Will the Green Room be declared a greenbud-free zone, in deference to Deadmau5’s sensitive sinuses? What happens when Rusko rolls on stage with his entourage?
One thing’s for sure: with Kanye West scheduled to appear, the possibilities for scandal, beef, manufactured controversy and spontaneous combustion are through the freakin’ roof. We are so there.
