Deadmau5 news round-up

Deadmau5 news round-up

Deadmau5 [a] doesn’t so much squeak, as he does roar, across clubland these days. A definitive juggernaut, the Canadian producer and his mouse head have become one of dance music’s most recognisable double acts and nothing seems able to stop the mighty mouse.

Make no mistake, Joel Zimmerman is the first bona fide global superstar for the electronic music digital download generation.

Here’s what Deadmau5 has been up to over the last few weeks.

TV ads & the Winter Olympics

Two major global companies are using Deadmau5’ music to advertise their products on TV at the moment.

In the UK, Samsung are currently running an ad which features Deadmau5’ ‘Ghosts N Stuff’. That follows the placement of the Nero remix of ‘Ghosts N Stuff’ on an ad for MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5 in the US in January.

Hot ticket: Deadmau5’ Olympics set

This Thursday back in Canada, Deadmau5 will perform at the Winter Olympics Whistler Victory Ceremony, a honour rarely bestowed to DJs or electronic music artists.

It isn’t quite like playing the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games - Dutch superstar DJ Tiësto saw his profile soar to stratospheric proportions following his 2004 Olympic Games opening ceremony set in Athens - but it will no doubt do wonders for Deadmau5’ global profile.

Unsurprisingly, a pair of General Admission tickets to Deadmau5’ Olympics gig sold for $200 on eBay last Sunday.

Tattoos, apps, and big tracks

Despite all of those achievements - Deadmau5 is still ‘keeping it real’ on social networking sites (and feeding a few trolls too).

On the weekend, he unveiled a new neck tattoo (above) that reads Meowski on top of an image of a cat footprint. That follows his Space Invaders-styled neck tattoo from April last year.

Deadmau5 iPhone app

Deadmau5 has also just released version II of his much heralded Touch Mix iPhone app, that allows fans to remix and mix some of Deadmau5 biggest hits on their iPhones whilst on the go.

The Deadmau5 Mix II app includes remix loops and parts to his latest hit ‘I Said’, produced alongside Britain’s Chris Lake [a].

The track’s low-slung tech house vibe is quite different to the euphoric melodic electro and progressive house that both producers are known for - “‘I said’ was written in 2007, in a basement apartment with a little phatty and a PC,” revealed Deadmau5 on his Facebook page after the track dropped.

‘I Said’ tops Deadmau5’ new and rather rare DJ chart (see player below) on Beatport, which highlights some of the star’s favourite club tracks of the moment.

Alongside a smattering of usual Deadmau5-flavoured goodies, there are a number of surprises including Stimming’s minimal house cut ‘After Eight’, released on Diynamic in April 2009, and the bleepy techno track ‘69’ by rising newcomer Harvey McKay on Soma.

Talking of new productions, Play Digital have just released a load of new mixes of Melleefresh’s recent track ‘Sex Slave’, that featured on the label’s new ‘Deadmau5 At Play Vol. 2’ compilation in December.

The release includes a Deadmau5 Make Me Make That Sound mix, which is a rough and tough electro house version, that does away with most of the naughty vocal for an altogether more bass-centric track.

And finally, be sure to keep an eye on Deadmau5’ Stickam page for some impromptu live broadcasts.

All in all, this mau5 has been busy.
