Deadmau5 at Play

The one and only, five-digit, tattooed, bright red rodent-man—uh, that’s Deadmau5 [a], in case you needed any more hints—gets down with the desert rats this weekend when he plays Colorado’s Global Dance Festival. The event is a two-day, three-stage extravaganza (just don’t call it a rave) presenting some of the biggest names in dance music, set in the breathtaking natural environs of the Red Rock Amphitheatre. Deadmau5 shares the bill with the likes of Infected Mushroom, Paul Van Dyk, Kaskade, BT, Pendulum, Rusko, Steve Aoki, and LA Riots—at least one of whom, we can only hope, uses the opportunity to play a U2 edit.

After Red Rocks, Deadmau5’s tour hits Salt Lake City, Toronto, Boston, Philly, Montclair, NJ, and Washington, D.C. before whipping him off to Japan and Europe. For full dates and more news from Deadmau5’s world—including his cover of Boards of Canada’s ‘Roygbiv’—read on.

Last month, veteran music scribe Paul Morley sat down with Deadmau5 for a comprehensive and insightful video interview for The Guardian newspaper. It’s a rare opportunity to see a journalist asking the artist smart, non-condescending questions, and Zimmerman rises to the occasion. Well worth watching.

Meanwhile, Deadmau5 keeps pushing ahead with new initiatives. The Public Record is offering the chance to collaborate with Deadmau5; check their website for details and to listen to submissions so far. July 30 is the deadline for users to submit their entries.

If you just feel like hanging out in Deadmau5’s studio, well, you can do that too; he frequently streams video of himself working in the studio here on Ustream.tv. (Oh, and get a load of his new modular synthesizer—talk about synth porn!)

Submissions recently closed in the competition to help Deadmau5 create a music video for ‘Some Chords’ (the track is available on Beatport now). The winning pitch came from Chris Lee, and the finished video should come online soon. For now, you can watch the video pitch video.

On the live-music front, Deadmau5 recently rocked LA’s Electric Daisy Carnival—where he had some seriously dedicated groupies—and he continues to tear the roof off with a live show incorporating some mindblowing LED props.

Deadmau5 released the third volume of ‘Deadmau5 at Play’ this week, following 2009’s volumes one and two.

The new collection rounds up 10 tracks from 2006 and 2007, and it reminds old and new fans alike that even back then, he was no one-trick critter. Cuts like ‘Cyclic Redundancy’ and ‘Apply Overnight’ showcase a more muted tech house sound; the melodic ‘Lai’ faintly recalls Border Community [l] or even Kompakt [l]; and ‘TL7’, ‘Templar’, ‘Stereo Fidelity’ and ‘Full Bloom’ capture Deadmau5 at his more driven and percussive. ‘Bounce’, meanwhile, is a rubbery electro house stormer, and ‘Whispers (Deadmau5 Remix)’ sounds a little like he was listening to old DJ Rush [a] records when he recorded it.

Oh, and that Boards of Canada cover? Check it out over on Deadmau5’s SoundCloud page.
