Deadbeat at Mutek Festival, Reveals New Album Plans
4 June, 2008 | 2.48PMThis past weekend during Mutek festival 2008, acclaimed dub and minimal techno artist, Deadbeat
, closed the second room during Mutek’s Saturday night program at Metropolis in Montreal.
Deadbeat, known for his fusion of jazzy and minimal techno, dubstep, and deep bass-filled grooves, had the whole second room packed full of enthusiastic dancers and technophiles moving their feet in awe.
Playing from his laptop with over-laying effects, he dropped some nice smooth dub, with heavier bass coming in, and warmed up to a very intelligent and danceable set.
It was definitely a killer set from one of the most talented artists Mutek put on their bill this year.
I was able to catch up with Deadbeat (Scott Monteith - who had moved to Berlin a year ago), in his adoptive hometown of Montreal outside of the SAT (La Société des Arts Technologiques) after his sound-check.
Scott said, “I’m going to close the small room at Metropolis after DJ Olive.
“I’ve been looking forward to it. I’ve been working for the last couple of months on a new album that will be coming out on Wagon Repair in October.
“So it will be a chance to experiment with some of the new material and also play some older stuff as well.”
When asked about his new album he explained, “There’s not a long overlying concept with it.
“I think with my last album, ‘Journeyman’s Annual’ on Scape, I was making it on the road and I wasn’t spending a lot of time in one studio and I think it has a more track-by-track feel to it.
“With my new album I went back and looked more at a larger picture, how I did on previous Scape releases.
“And I also want to encapsulate the diversity of the music that I’ve been making has taken on in the last couple of years.”
Regarding the range of genres – from dub to proper minimal techno – that his productions span, Scott explains, “I’ve had the opportunity to play a lot of very diverse venues over the last few years.
“And that ranged from theatres and art galleries to techno clubs, and as a result I’ve had to try and come up with ways of providing effective sounds for all of those different environments.
“The interesting thing creatively for me with that is that all of those things can come together in different ways.
“I find different ways of combining more proper dub reggae stuff with ambient stuff with techno stuff – hopefully to arrive at a new musical proposition that works in any environment.”
If the eclectic and seamlessly delicious set Deadbeat delivered at Mutek is any indication of what’s to come, his new album (which we will have to wait patiently for until October) is sure to be a treat.
Scott says he’ll be busying himself in the next few weeks to finish his album, since he will be touring soon after.
He revealed, “I’ll be playing a lot of dates in Europe - the Wilsonic festival in Bratislava, a few dates in Spain, and heading to Japan in July.”
