Davidson Ospina collects for a digital exclusive
1 February, 2008 | 9.37PMIt’s nice to be able to write about the success of a producer who I first championed over a decade ago, worked closely with for many years and is now an even closer friend.
Yes, nepotism is alive and well, but in Davidson Ospina’s case, his music speaks greater volumes then my superlatives.
There are many sides to the man from Queens, NY — musician, DJ, producer, remixer and even web designer, with an impressive list of productions and remixes to his name too that include Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Pet Shop Boys and even Grandmaster Flash.
In recent years, his Ospina Digital
label has occupied a fair chunk of his time, and now his self-run imprint has compiled a great retrospective snapshot collection of the man’s career to date.
Davidson Ospina
‘Classics Volume 1’ — a 10-track collection is available exclusively through Beatport — pulls together an assortment of his past recordings, many available for the first time digitally and all newly re-mastered too.
His early electro classic ‘Toma’, as El Cantor, makes a welcome return 13 years after Digital Dungeon first issued it, as does his infamous Chronicles tracks ‘Strings’ and ‘Love Rhythm’ from the Henry Street vaults.
Add a trio of NYC Live & Direct releases (‘Move Like This’, ‘Everything U Need’ and ‘I Want You’) plus a handful of cuts from his Spina stable including 2002’s ‘I Need More’ — a cut that embodies his trademark bangin’ tribal drums and freestyle Latin percussion with cut-up hooky vocal snatches.
Davidson’s a seasoned pro at tracky house and has an enviable résumé that’ll win yet more kudos, as this strong retrospective will attest.
