David Duriez interview
11 July, 2007 | 3.19AMWhen it comes to underground dance music few names are as well respected and known the planet over as Parisian native David Duriez
. His name has appeared on over 200 records as writer, producer or remixer and he’s been DJing the globe over for the last 15 years.
Through it all he has somehow managed to keep a fresh outlook and intense passion for his take on house and techno.
In addition to his work as an artist, he has created or worked on an enviable stable of labels through his Les Macons De La Musique company.
Through MDLM he has manufactured, distributed or executively produced labels like Brique Rouge
, Robsoul, Freak n’Chic, Kill Brique, Gourmet, Fresh Meat, Hypnotic and the notorious RZ Muzik.
Duriez has one of the most hectic schedules in the business constantly on tour DJing and spending what little time remains either locked in the studio or working in his MDLM office masterminding the dissemination of his brand of underground dance music.
Beatportal was able to catch up with Monsieur Duriez and pick his mind for a few gems of knowledge.
You’ve been in charge of so many labels in your career. Which labels are you running right now?
“Nowadays I’m pretty focused on Brique Rouge and Kill Brique which are my two babies. I’m also running the business around Gourmet Recordings and Fresh Meat.”
Has the digital revolution affected your business much?
“I would say this is a huge change in dance music distribution and it is affecting my business by becoming more and more important while a few years back it was all about vinyl sales.
“Now it’s not a secret, vinyl is going away and turning into a collector item, so you have to embrace the digital revolution.
“That’s what I started doing three or four years ago and this might be only the beginning.”
Is there a secret to running a successful dance label?
“Firstly let me say that I have just decided to focus now only on my two Brique imprints so I have more time to work on them.
“There is no secrets to running a successful label, success takes money, marketing and promotion. If you’re short on one of those it becomes harder to make it.”
Who are the main artists you are supporting right now?
“The people around me that I’m pushing are guys like Tommy Four Seven, Alex Parsons, Jamie McHugh, the infamous Hardfloor guys and a few others.
“I limit myself to a few names in order to provide a real and proper support.”
Have you got any upfront info on your next big releases coming out of the Brique Rouge camp?
“We have quite a few good releases in the pipeline for September.
“Let’s just say we have remixes by the likes of Satoshi Tomiie, Mason, Art Of Tones and Josh Wink. It’s pretty hot and I just can’t wait to unleash all those gems.”
How important is DJing to you?
Very important, I’m a DJ first and foremost. I’ve just come back from a long weekend in Spain where I ended playing openair on Sunday night with a water pistol in each hand.
“You never know in advance what will happen at parties.
“I have a tour across Europe this summer including Turkey, Bulgaria, France, UK, Holland and Spain, which will be fun.”
You live in one of the world’s most famous cities. How is the pulse of house music in Paris?
“Paris is OK but a bit behind when you compare it to London, Barcelona or Berlin.
“However we have some very good clubs like Terrassa in the summer, Red Light where I run my Brique Rouge night and of course the famous clubs like Rex Club or Batofar.
“The scene is good though very trendy.”
