Dance fans wage war on corporate radio
20 July, 2007 | 7.33AMSome hardcore electronic music enthusiasts in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, have waged war on a local radio station after it refused to play electronic music.
A collective of DJs and producers who were fed up with the corporate nature of radio in America, decided to email their local station, Q96 WQQB, to find out if they could help out on its regular dance music show.
“We need to get more electronic music on the radio, we should try to get more people that just listen to mainstream music to listen to electronic music,” they explained on their website theinfiniteimagination.com.
Their message was however snubbed by Q96 DJ Joe McIntyre.
So they decided to reprint Joe McIntyre’s email correspondence on their website (including a picture of McIntyre and his email address) in order to highlight the negative attitude radio stations have towards electronic music.
The story is starting to gain some attention from the Digg community.
Do radio stations in America really only care about making money? Is it possible to hear decent electronic music on the radio in the States? Should radio stations just play middle of the road music that appeases the masses?
