Culture Dox 009: Newworldaquarium

One of the things we love about the Culture Dox series of interviews is that they put a face to many artists who tend to lurk in the shadows.

From his first experiments with analogue gear in the ‘80s—kickstarted by a drum computer his grandmother gave him—to the origin of his alias, Newworldaquarium [a] (aka Jochem Peteri) fills us in on some deep background as well as the philosophy behind his classic, experimental, deeply sensual house and techno. Surprisingly, he also reveals that he’s an Ableton DJ, something you might not have expected from an artist known for such a resolutely analog sound.

Something else you might not expect is to hear such an American-inflected accent coming out of a Dutchman; it’s not hard to believe that Peteri grew up on hip-hop. The only downside is to find out that Newworldaquarium is just a regular-looking bearded dude who wears a plaid shirt and smokes cigarettes, and not the stainless-steel, steampunk cyborg with laser eyes that we were secretly hoping for.

Newworldaquarium (aka 154 [a] and Ross 154 [a]) isn’t the most prolific of artists, but everything he does is pretty much indispensable, if you’re a fan of classic, Detroit-influenced techno with heart and teeth. Check his material out on Delsin Records [l] and his own NWAQ [l] label—particularly, if you don’t know it, his timeless 2000 track ”Trespassers," reissued on NWAQ last year.
