Cratedigger Essentials: Jimmy Edgar
Cratedigger Essentials: Jimmy Edgar
3 September, 2010 | 7.32AMGiven dance music’s focus on the new-new-new, a lot of older music can fall by the wayside. But there’s nothing like the feel of chancing across a forgotten track that never sounded as good as it does right now. Cratedigger Essentials is a feature highlighting those forgotten gems that our guest selectors keep on hand for when something a little different is called for.
This week, we’ve got Jimmy Edgar
in the hot seat. Signed to Warp for several years, the Detroit native recently resurfaced on K7 with ‘XXX’, an electro-funk extravaganza that touches upon vintage techno, new jack swing, Prince, and more. Its lascivious lead single ‘Hot, Raw Sex’ gets further hot and bothered via remixes from Kris Wadsworth
and Machine Drum
.
Check out Edgar’s classic picks below.
Michael Mayer, ‘Amanda’ [Kompakt]
This is the track that won me over for Kompakt
and Michael Mayer
. I love fitting this in—when the vibe is right, of course. When I first heard it I thought Michael Mayer had started working with vocalists, but then I figured he probably sampled it. It’s perfect though, the vocals are so sexy. Reminds me of Severed Heads’ ‘Lamborghini’ which is an extremely hard track to find, at least the one featuring female vocals.
Fingers Inc., ‘It’s Over’ [DJ International]
You cannot deny the mood of Fingers. This one I like to play because of the new jack swing bassline. When I was first starting to make music I was always trying to get that melodic style. I made a song called ‘Lucky’ and never put it out because the bass I used ended up recording too noisy onto tape. Anyways, the vocals work really nice. This Chicago sound is what really implanted dance music for me, even though I grew up in Detroit. It was so new to me, a bit more uplifting gospel sound. I dropped it when I had my release party at Panorama Bar. I mixed it into another really rare track that I havent been able to find a good copy of. Richard Chartier (LINE/12k) gave it to me, it’s called ‘Miss Tina’. I like this metrosexual drag house style, so raw.
Nitzer Ebb, ‘Shame (Derrick May Remix)’ [Novamute]
Unless I’m in Detroit I don’t find myself playing this kind of stuff a lot… maybe in Leipzig. Hard kick, hard snare, and modular shit going on. I use CDJ1000s normally and there are lots of spots in here to use the loop function and keep it in the back for that edge that makes you wanna pound fists.
Arpanet, ‘Event Horizon’ [Record Makers]
I love Heinrich/Gerald’s voice. Dopplereffekt
, Drexciya
, and everything else he has been involved with is Detroit for me. If it wasn’t for him and James I wouldnt be where I am right now. They have something special in honing in on a sound and making it as dark and mysterious as possible. These new Arpanet tracks are good for adding melody for a breakdown. That Glass release they did too was great with the ‘Hiccups’ track on clear vinyl.
