Cratedigger Essentials: Ewan Pearson

Cratedigger Essentials: Ewan Pearson

Given dance music’s focus on the new-new-new, a lot of older music can fall by the wayside. But there’s nothing like the feel of chancing across a forgotten track that never sounded as good as it does right now. (Who wants to play only new records all night long, anyway?) Cratedigger Essentials is a feature highlighting those forgotten gems that our guest selectors keep on hand for when something a little different is called for.

When it comes to keeping a varied crate, many DJs could stand to learn a thing or two from Ewan Pearson [a]. It’s not that he plays obscurities just to get cred points—in fact, his new mix CD for Kompakt [l], ‘We Are Proud of Our Choices’, is composed of mostly recent tracks. But Ewan’s sets stand out for their rare sense of musicality, carefully blending harmonic atmospheres and almost-pop melodies with intricate rhythms and a surging pulse—and all without ever forgetting to rock the party to the rafters.

Ewan hips us to two older cuts (and one more recent one) that you’re not likely to hear many other DJs playing—though you may want to snag them for your own sets. Happy digging.

Ego Express, ‘Telefunken (Michael Mayer Remix)’ [Ladomat 2000]

Galloping 20th Century techno from Herr Mayer (circa 1999), which I’ve been playing lots again recently. The breakbeat and the abrasive synths make it sound positively punk rock compared to the smoothness and polish of most laptop-produced stuff these days. Maybe I’m just an old bastard but I have a nagging sensation that we’ve lost something with all this competence of late. A slap in the face can be invigorating at times.

DJ Ali, ‘You Don’t Know (Ruff Cut)’ [Classic]

A wonderful bumpy vaguely UK garage cut from Derrick and Luke’s Classic Recordings in 2003. It’s a superb bit of falsetto party funk, and one of those records whose time has come to shine again in context of the likes of Lee Curtiss, Soul Clap etc.

Terry Toner, ‘A Walk In The Dunes (Alexi Delano Remix)’ [Echoism]

From a couple of years ago, but I still carry this with me at all times as it kills and I’ve never heard anyone else play it. It has a fairly typical for the time bouncy little minimal drum thing going on, but really untypical CP80 stage piano chords and a massive strange buzzing foghorn of a synth halfway through. Both of the latter elements may have put minimal types off, but I love records where things happen, and even if the different elements sound incongruous on paper, they really work here.
